LAX CBP: No Reentry Stamp For Thee!

Sat Jan 12, 2013 3:21 pm

Returned from an extended trip to Asia through LAX yesterday. Aside from the visual reminder about what a dump Tom Bradley is when compared with most international facilities in other countries, I had one particular experience that hasn't happened before.

CBP hasn't stamped US passports on return for years now, but they've always been willing to when asked. As I have one of the older 45 page passports that will expire before it fills up and I like to have a record of my return date I usually remember to ask for a return stamp and up until yesterday CBP has been more than willing to accommodate the request.

Yesterday at LAX, I asked for a stamp. The agent said no and that there were only 4 circumstances in which they would stamp a US passport. After 36 hours of travel my memory is fuzzy, but one of them had something to do with travel with a minor. Don't recall the rest.

Strange because last month I returned through SFO and they had no problems stamping my passport.

I honestly don't know why this is in trip reports, but here is my anecdotal stories from filling up two passports.

I have had one time that I was refused an entry/exit stamp for any country (26 and counting) and that was Israel. While it would have been really neat to have that stamp in there, they asked me if I plan on heading to a Gulf nation or anywhere in the middle east and they refused to stamp my passport given my "i really don't know" just due to the hostility in the region and that would give their CBP folks more than enough to give me the rubber glove treatment or just straight up deny my entry into their countries.

US CBP for the most part stamps both my blue form and a passport page. I like my pages nice and orderly and every other country just finds the next page with room for their stamp and places it in there. US CBP loves to just open my passport, usually halfway to almost the end of it and stamp there.

I have gone thru RDU, ATL, BOS, MSP, DTW, MCO, MEM, CVG, LAX, HNL, SEA, SFO, and SLC customs state-side (and DUB-preclearance) and only once going thru ATL did I not get a stamp (got it after asking).

If I had to guess, it's maybe that the chip reader in the new US passports have surpassed a certain percentage that they don't stamp those passports anymore? Or it could be a new policy or procedure for the CBP as of this year?

I will be sad to find out if this is the case as I like the US stamp (and to see how many I can get!)

Wasn't sure where else to put it. Is there a better forum?

I did see a notice a while ago that stated that State was no longer going to issue the 45 page passport, even if requested. Apparently anyone who needs more pages now has to send in their passport and ask for the additional pages to be stapled in. Although the US may not be stamping entry/exit anymore, most other countries still are. Even those that participate in Visa Waiver like Singapore, Taiwan, and the UK.

And I agree - some agents are reasonably considerate about stamping. Most are not. This guy may have been having a bad day. I was standing in line for over 30 minutes while he had someone come over and try to fix his terminal.

In extensive international travel in to the States - albeit all on the east coast - I don't think I've ever NOT received a stamp. Is it different in California?

I have passports from 30 years ago that all show reentry stamps and never had to ask for them back then. At some point, I noticed that CBP weren't stamping the passport, just the Customs Declaration form, but would stamp the passport if asked. Now it seems they aren't even doing that unless I just hit an agent who was having a bad day.

I was about 50/50 getting them before I got Global Entry; since then there's been no need for stamping.

The same here. I don't travel internationally very often, but when I have I've always gotten a stamp from US CBP upon reentry to the USA, including at LAX just a few months ago. I didn't even ask; they just stamped it. Could it be because I still have the older style passport without the RFID chip?

I haven't traveled international all that much, but every time I got stamped upon reentry (and I have a passport with the RFID chip). Honestly I thought that was procedure, I didn't know that they apparently sometimes don't stamp the passport.

I never get stamped anymore.... Since my international travel is basically exclusively US-EU, they just scan the thing and don't stamp. My passport is empty.

There has never been a reason, but at one point at least, it was routine throughout the country. Much of western Europe is far ahead of the States on not stamping passports. At least for US citizens, France hasn't stamped routinely in ages.

I think age of the passport is the issue. Mine expires in 2014, which IIRC makes it two generations removed from what is currently being issued.

Last time I got a passport stamp upon returning to the US was at PHL in 1997. Since then I've entered through ATL, DFW, and LAX, and done pre clearance at YOW, and none of them have stamped my passport, only the customs declaration. I'd guessed that it had to do with US citizens not needing a documented entry date into the US (to verify that a visitor hasn't overstayed, for example).

I wasn't aware that many European countries weren't stamping US passports. VCE in 2007, LHR in 2009, and BRU in 2012 all stamped mine, though only BRU was with the new RFID passport.

I was just calculating if my current 45 page passport would last out the two years until it expires. Based on my historic patterns, I'll end up with maybe 3 empty pages. I hope CBP doesn't use them up. At some border entries I ask them to use a particular page that has an empty slot just to keep things compact. In some places a sloppy stamp can take 2 or 3 positions.

China uses an entire page for every single entry visa. Most annoying.

I agree with you - but it's a good example of the range and variety of A.nuts and their interests - in this case some want all the stamps they can get, while I often have to beg them not to stamp or at least be neat and maximise the stamps per page, just so I don't have to get a new passport every couple of years. My current one 'might' make 4 years, but only due to overt / aggresive management of stamp happy immigration officers. (Not too aggressive of course, or you get a the undesired experience of finding out what happens behind the inspection doors).

Exit stamps are the worst - especially when just transiting the airport! About a third of my stamps are probably entry / exits where I was in the country for 4 hours or less! Fortunately the US and Canada won't stamp 99% of the time (well, maybe 90% of the time for the US, as even with NEXUS / Global Entry I did pick up a couple of US entry stamps last year...go figure).

As does Burma (Myanmar). In fact they also staple a copy of the approved visa application to the passport page with the visa stamp which gets removed on entry.

India uses a whole page stick on visa similar to China for multi-entry visas. Never had a single entry India visa, so I don't know if that's the same.

2 stamps vs 3 non-stamps for me since I got the US passport.

At FRA, I have to ask sometimes, but I am always able to get a stamp. I left via RMS once and didn't get a stamp and when I next entered the EU via FRA, the Bundespolizei was very quick to notice I had an entry stamp without a matching exit stamp. That led to a rather long conversation in an interview room to get straightened out.

I would say the same thing, I have never had my passport stamped returning to Canada.

US CBP hardly stamp Canadian passports as well. I have only ever received one stamp at YYZ pre-clearance and every other time it hasn't been. Furthermore they don't stamp at the land border either.

The only times I get US stamps if I clear US customs at a US airport or a port returning from a cruise.

I have a hard time believing that. I have numerous non-matching EU stamps. CDG, for instance, is spotty about stamping on entry but almost always stamps on exit. Many if not most of my matching EU pairs, however, are nowhere near each other in my passport.

As a dual citizen, I always enter the US on my US passport. With that in mind, I almost never, ever get a US entry stamp. I think I have three in the last three years (and I clear US immigration about 20 times each year, so 3 out of 60 times I have gotten a stamp). Those stamps were at JFK, ORD and YUL (I think). LAX, SFO, DFW, multiple other times through ORD, IAD, SEA, MIA, ATL...nothing.

And yes, I know I should get Global Entry. Just haven't gotten around to it.

Land border or air??

If its a land border the customs guy at the booth probably doesn't have one. They do inside the border inspection buildings if you have to clear customs in there.

IIRC anyone not Canadian or American would have to do so.

At an airport he is a liar and has a stamp because they stamp the immigration card or they should.

If France is your first point of entry to the Schengen area, they should be stamping your passport. Same applies at the last point of departure from the Schengen area. Without the stamps they can't tell whether you've overstayed your visa-free stay period.

Armenia does too. I don't travel much so I don't mind, but if one is a frequent flier it could be an inconvenience. Always catches the eye of the Customs guy, even if it is from several years ago... slows down the process a good thirty seconds or so.

Should be, being the operative phrase. When I went (flew in from LPL to BSL) back in 2008, and exited via the French side (before Switzerland officially became a Schengen country), the guy thumbed through my passport and handed it back to me. Not a word spoken (probably assumed I didn't speak any French).

Strangely enough, a few days later me and a train load of people walked around a little confused when entering Switzerland via train from France. The immigration booth was shuttered up, apparently 6 months sooner than anyone thought.

I would think they don't as anyone crossing into the US or Canada who doesn't have a US or Canada passport probably needs to go in for formal clearance (meaning get out of the car) and Canadians and Americans get a quick check.

I'll probably test this out in the next few weeks when me and an Aussie friend may drive down to Buffalo for a hockey game and I'm curious to see what they do clear a Canadian and an Aussie at a land border.
