90 Mins Connection Time Ok For JFK?

Sun Jan 13, 2013 9:10 pm

A friend of mine just asked me about flights he's planning.
They would involve connecting through JFK.
His planned routing is: CHS-JFK-AMS-GLA

CHS-JFK is with Delta
JFK-AMS-GLA with KLM

The JFK-AMS flight leaves 90 mins after scheduled arrival from CHS.

Will 90 mins be enough time?

Also, as Delta and KLM are in Skyteam, does that mean they'll be looked after in the case of missing the connection due to delays on the CHS-JFK leg?

It shouldn't be an issue. Is it all issued on the same ticket? If so, DL will look after them.

If it is a domestic arrival (which it is), then there is no problem.

A 90 minute connection at JFK can be tight; however, in this case, I think it will be OK for the following reason:

Generally, Delta Connection flights arriving at JFK will park at Terminal 2, Gates 22, 23, 24, or 25. As I recall, there is a connecting bus that departs from Terminal 2, Gate 19 and goes to Terminal 4, Gate B-23, so in this case your friend will not have to clear Security again and KLM flights from JFK depart from the B Concourse of Terminal 4.

If you get a chance, go to the Delta website, www.delta.com, click on Terminal maps--JFK--for a pictoral depiction of my explanation.

Should be OK.

The biggest question is

If it's not, your friend might want to look for a longer layover if he's got any luggage, as he'd be close to the cutoff point by the time the luggage comes out. Sometimes the 1st leg check-in agent will be able to through check the luggage even if it's on a separate ticket, but I wouldn't rely on it (and I'm not sure how likely this would be between two airlines).

Excellent, thanks for the feedback folks.

They will be booking the entire itinerary directly from the DL website.
They will do so with confidence now
