Heavy Snow; UA881 Is Approaching To Yokota

Mon Jan 14, 2013 8:31 am

Today so many flights to Tokyo have been prevented by heavy snow. Now I'm observing UA881 to Narita is diverting to Yokota Air Base. I am so curious how Japanese passengers feel to land to USAF airbase.

He seems to have landed to Yokota safely. I can imagine cockpit crews are so tired that they had held for a long time above the ocean before he decided to divert. I wonder the pilot might be familiar with Yokota airbase because he was ex USAF pilot?

wjcandee, the most probable that Narita can't handle so many ground traffic under very poor visibility and this has forced many flights to hold in the air for long time. ( CAT2? 3?) In addition wind condition is not so good. One flight had two miss approaches.
Narita and Haneda is open officially but nearly closed.

Looks like most flights are arriving at Haneda with "little" trouble. Some broken cloudy layers at lower altitudes but its the wind that's up there a little bit.

Enjoy the snow!

Are aircraft allowed to land there? IIRC here in the states landing at an AFB is reserved for dire straights emergencies only.

Quoting PHX787 (Reply 6):

Yes. There are agreements that need to be signed ahead of time. I'm in process of reviewing one now...

It's surprisingly less complicated than it seems.

But as you mention, it is last case scenario typically. No emergency needed, however.

Using OKO is not that big an issues especially for US carriers.

As some might know many US carriers request and receive blanket approvals for use of Air Force and Navy/Marine bases and have the authorizations as part of their ops-specs.

For OKO specifically, its almost a normal occasion for someone to drop in as part of a diversion when things go south in the Tokyo metro area.
