Why The Terrible Arrival/departure Times At DXB?

Tue Jan 15, 2013 6:51 pm

I'm planning on going to Dubai, and looking at the various flights and their arrival times, it seems that the vast majority of the flights arrive between 11 PM and 2 or 3 AM. At least it's the case with the flights directly from the US or from the US connecting through Europe. United from IAD arrives in the afternoon, and Delta from ATL arrives at 7 or 8 PM, but any of the connections through Europe seem to arrive in the middle of the night. That's a terrible time to arrive at your destination. Why the late night times? Thanks

Because many of those flights are aimed at connecting passengers bound for points beyond Dubai, who are more concerned with the arrival/departure times at their final destinations.

The simple answer is one word: GEOGRAPHY. Basically the flight times in the area between Europe and Asia are crappy in order to allow Europeans and Asians to have more reasonable times for their long-haul flights. Maybe over time that will change, but history is that those were much more powerful economic areas and schedules were built around them and their hubs. Emirates could theoretically schedule DXB for the "local market" and have attractive times, but since they are dependent upon connecting traffic, they'd rather have times similar to rivals like BA and JAL.

If you're arriving from Europe at 3AM it feels like about midnight. And if you're arriving from the US it feels like about 3-6PM. I you look at it that way it's not bad anymore.

All the Middle East operates like that, with connecting traffic or not. Flights to Europe from the Gulf area tend to leave in the middle of the night to make an early arrival time in Europe. I've caught flights from Jeddah at 2.30 or 3am and there is no connecting traffic.

Sometimes I arrive in DXB at 8pm and it feels like the airport is closed. At 1-2am it becomes very crowded.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

As noted above, most flights to this region operate similar arrival/departure times (common at DXB, AMM, TLV, AUH, etc., and also in India). Main reason is connectivity, as mentioned (for example, all those flights needs to leave by 3-4am in order to arrive at the European hubs in time for the departure banks to the US/Canada). Similar flight times are common in India.

Another contributing factor is the daytime heat in the summer... those late night operations take advantage of the cooler/more favorable take-off and landing conditions.
