Which Other Airlines Had A Bad Livery Reception?

Thu Jan 24, 2013 8:02 am

So American has had petitions against it's tail, and the original designer and critics have slated it... What other airlines have had a similar reaction to an updated livery? I know British Airways famously got slated for it's world tails... Any others ever get such a reaction?

I think the list of airlines that have NOT received a bad reception will be shorter lol.

I went back to the "New Delta Livery" thread from 2007 and it seems that livery also had a pretty bad reception.

the original designer

Of course he did. They are getting rid of the symbol, livery and over all brand that he created. Its only natural that he will dislike the new brand.

I'd say two recent examples would be Finnair and JAL - and both for similar reasons.

(Although I must say the new livery is growing on me - that dark blue is a great colour)

Well to be honest, AA's new livery has only had a bad reception here more than anywhere else... at least from what ive seen.
Please let me know... If you know this is the end of the world, Let me know... If you know the truth...

The case study in how not to rebrand was the Royal Mail which briefly tried to become Consignia. Briefly.

I was thinking the same thing.

Just about every new livery gets complaints about things like "eurowhite" etc.

There have been some with good reception, but more with bad reception at a.net. However, many of the ones with bad receptions at the start do grow on people and get better with time, and I honestly think the same will happen with American.

This is actually rather expected in an aviation forum. Most of us love aviation and really take notice of liveries. These liveries become the identity of the airlines and any drastic change almost always become conflicted with the identity that we have given the airlines. Change to things we love always creates bitterness.

I don't think American could have done anything that would have gotten 80%+ approval here (except possibly keeping old livery even though it wouldn't have worked with newer aircraft).

Was the return of the old JAL symbol on the tail not generally seen as a step in the right direction?

Don't forget Air India which introduced this livery long enough for part of the fleet to be painted before changing back.

Then Air India tried to introduce this scheme but as far as I remember it was scrapped before they even took delivery of it

We can't forget Biman's scheme they introduced on their leased 777-200 and A310s:

Then TAAG Angola tried to introduce this scheme but again never even got delivered wearing it:

Lufthansa trialled this scheme but was not very popular either:

Closer to home (mine anyway) was of course the "Silver bullet". This scheme was dropped not because of marketing reasons but because the financial savings were not as great as previously thought.

ContiNited/UNental, whatever you prefer

The United tulip was iconic, the Continental globe was less so.

Experience tells us that small - more regular - changes to an airline's livery are more easily accepted than big changes. Yet, over time these changes keep an airline's livery fresh and modern looking.

In the real world, however, I only really remember people talking about the British Airways World Tails scheme, many of which I thought were pretty awful. I liked the tartan one though, particularly on the 727.

That is because they merged with Indian Airlines, so they altered the livery to reflect the new carrier.

Change in management is to blame for that.

Anecdotal evidence would seem to suggest that people loved the change from this:

I don't see why the old AA llivery wouldn't have worked with aircraft that must be painted. It would have worked fine with the metallic silver type of paint used in the final NW livery, Germanwings and several others.

On Airliners, every livery has had a bad reception... people seem to hate change here more than anywhere else.
