Transit Time DL At NRT?

Thu Jan 31, 2013 1:13 am

I am planing a DTW-???-BKK trip for this coming summer on DL. I have two options; one with a stop in ICN and another stopping at NRT. The NRT connection time is only one hour going there and coming back. Is that doable? I can't imagine DL would sell the ticket if it wasn't, but that seems really tight!!! I noticed the DTW-NRT (DL275) and the NRT-BKK (DL283) are both 744s and that made me wonder is it the same plane?

Legal MCT time is 1:00hr from international to international flights unless you are changing terminals at Narita.

Last time I saw the schedule, the 744 origins from DTW goes to TPE after NRT.

It should be enough time for the transfer if you don't run into huge lines at the security. They usually have ground staff accompanying transferring pax delayed by the inbound flight to expedite going through security and give you gate info for the next flight.

I've done it a few times. It's always been an easy transfer for me....and not just to BKK. Great spotting when you just get off the plane. But the longer you spot, the longer you wait in line. If you're flying coach, you might want to skip the spotting.

I have made connections in NRT many times over the past few years although always on UA/SQ. 1h should be enough. The terminal is quite compact so there are no excessively long treks between gates, nothing like FRA for instance. The rate limiting step is always going through security. Depending upon time of day the waiting time can be 1min to 30min. However, the staff are very good at getting you through if you have a tight connection. The only other issue might be your late arrival in to NRT

It's possible that you will be on the same aircraft for the BKK leg. Even if this is the case, you will have to get off and go through security. On the other hand you wouldn't have to worry about a delay getting in to NRT.

What's the problem with going through ICN? It's a really nice airport.

That is what I figured, but if the plane was the same I wouldn't have to worry about my checked bags not making the connection.

I had a similar issue a few years ago on NW flying DTW-IND-SFO. We were late out of DTW and there was no way I would be able to make the IND connection. I told the gate agent my problem and she pointed to a couple pilots sitting near by and said I wouldn't have a problem, those were the pilots flying IND-SFO.

Nothing wrong with going through ICN. I was thinking about going through NRT one way and ICN on the other. I have never been to Asia before (been to Europe a lot so its time to see the other side of the world) so I thought I would see a couple of airports.

Sounds like a good plan. All the best for the trip, it's a great part of the world to explore.
