Poor First Class Meal On UA ABQ-IAD

Fri Feb 01, 2013 12:06 pm

Last month, I flew from ABQ to IAD on a PMCO 737-800 in First Class, and was rather disappointed by what we were served for breakfast. The only option was Cork Flakes with 2% milk, a Nature Valley Granola bar, and a small cup of fruit. No hot meal option to speak of on a 3 hour flight. After reading some recent trip reports on AA and seeing what they offer in domestic First, UA really needs to get their act together and offer a meal that is worthy of being served in a premium cabin.

What time was take off?
What you describe sounds VERY mean for First. In the UK a 1hr hop from LGW-AMS in the morning gets a hot big breakfast in Club, similar to domestic First. Sounds like the bean counters have been at the menu.
you don't get a second chance to make a first impression!

HEL-AMS on KL (C class) served an omelette and potatoes and bread. 2hr flight.

UA is my least favorite of the US legacies. Sounds like its getting even worse. :-/
I've heard from a few on here they were attempting to better the service. Maybe something in the works perhaps??

Usually UA would have a hot breakfast egg item and then what you said was on offer. What you are implying sounds like either breakfast wasn't loaded or that the flight had return catering from the night before and either did not have the hot item or somehow it was spoiled or unusable or taken by other people.

Your mistake was expecting service on any US airline in any class on a Domestic route.

Here in Indonesia I get a hot breakfast on a 3 hour economy flight...

In first class this simply isn't true. What was offered was absolutely dreadful.

Are you sure they hadn't run out of the hot meal by the time they got to you?

It departed at 8:17am, and was advertised as having a breakfast service.

I'm sure. The flight attendant went around and offered cereal to everyone in First. Another passenger asked if they had anything else to offer beside Corn Flakes, and was told no.

Ahhh, but did you notice the crew having eggs?

Take a look because as funny as it may sound, we had a flight that should have offered the snack basket between the meal and arrival yet the snack basket never made it out of the galley....totally consumed by the flight crew which I found quite interesting. Curious how often that stuff happens?

It has always amazed me how someone in a four or five row First Class cabin is able to hear everything being said to other passengers, even during a climb power setting, stunning!

That would be my guess as I've flown a number of UA flights in First Class less than three hours early in the morning and always been offered either a hot breakfast or cereal.

Okay, I can top that.

Back on January 26th, we had a tech issue with our A319 flying as UA662 EWR-PDX. After two hours of waiting, a spare A320 was rolled out, and we all boarded. Because there were four additional seats in the front, four of us elites got gate-upgrades to first class. About 40 minutes after takeoff, our Purser informed us that row 3 hadn't been catered (the crippled A319 only had two "F" rows) and we would have no dinner. This was in addition to departing two hours late and having some of us miss our connecting flights in Portland. However, the pro-active Purser offered all of us in row 3 unlimited bar service, and then went in the back and got some snack boxes and entree selections that he offered us free of charge.

And to be honest, a "Tapas" box is absolutely delicious after several Jim Beams and three red wines

Sounds like a miscater. Even RON catered flights like early AM TPA-ORD flights have eggs + cereal/milk + banana + a croissant.

I am not sure it occurred in your case, but sometimes (rarely thankfully) crew meals are not boarded. As crew meals are an Air Regs requirement, and as on a domestic flight, the only available meals are F/J meals .... a decision has to be made.

Either delay the flight, or take something from the J galley. Not an ideal situation either way, but normally System Operational Control makes the decision to go on time and "steal" the J meals. On overseas flights, we usually just have Y meals if no crew meals are boarded.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

Sounds worthy of a written complaint. If that's first class I'm glad I only fly economy.
