Sat Feb 02, 2013 10:07 pm

Caught this bird landing 6R this morning at LAX, does anyone know the cause?

Must have been pretty dire since they were barely off the coast and on the ground in a short amount of time. The fact that the plane is still on the ground in LAX tells me the issue wasn't a medical one.

Was it actually an emergency landing or was it a diversion? You were there so I assume you know better than me. It was probably a mechanical diversion because if it was a medical, it would've taken off by now.

I would suspect it was indeed an emergency given the fact it landed to the east and made basically a straight-in approach after having turned around. Unless of course, LAX was landing normally to the east, but even then, there would have been sequencing involved, unless an emergency was declared. I'm guessing a quite serious mechanical issue was the culprit.

It stopped on the runway for a good 10-15 minutes than made its way over to the remote stands. There was an armada of emergency vehicles so it definitely wasn't a medical. Don't know the weight particulars of the 330, but I'd imagine it was a pretty heavy landing.

False alarm according to KTLA, who apparently couldn't find a more recent stock photo.

You know, before opening the link, I jokingly asked myself if the stock photo you referred to was of a DC-8...I actually laughed out loud after opening the link. Good grief!!

Seriously? A DC8 photo? Wow. Glad to know it was a false alarm and that they're safely on the ground.

I like how they use the term "a diversion in the cockpit"

I guess the rest of the plane is still on it's way to HNL!

That livery reminds me of the original Frontier Airlines early 80's livery.
