US PHX-PHL: Passport Check In PHX

Sat Feb 09, 2013 8:49 pm

While transitting thru Phoenix on US Airways, I heard the boarding call for a flight to Philadelphia (US 1194). Upon each call, the gate agent announced that "...passengers connecting to International flights in Philadelphia must present their passports upon boarding…".
I was wondering why this was done in Phoenix.

Thanks.

Better then sending you to PHL without the required documents to continue onward.

We verify documents at outstations all the time at check-in. Saves a lot of time at the gate at the hub.

Thanks for the info. I figured that was the case, it certainly makes sense.
Do other carriers practice the same? When I flew Continental via EWR and Delta via ATL from Detroit, I don't recall having my documents checked until boarding the International flights.

How are the staff at the gate supposed to know who is connecting where in PHL?
If it ain't Dutch, it ain't much.

We see their Itinerary when they check in....if they check in on a kiosk there is a note on the boarding pass to check as they board.

Every airline I have worked at has done the same. In fact, (try) to verify documentation at every step of the process, from check-in to boarding at each station.

This is normal at every carrier. It is better to catch documentation problems at the outstation than send the pax to the hub and then have to send them right back home because the documents are not OK.

The magic of computers, I expect. New-fangled inventions that allow systems to be displayed to staff and manage bookings.

Standard procedure. When I flew from CVG to DTW for my connection to NRT, they checked my passport.

Same when I left PHX for LAX-NRT. Passport check.

A few simple key strokes on Delta Term will bring up a list of passengers making connecting flights, where they're connecting to, and who needs their passports checked. Standard procedure.

My passport was never checked at any of the outstations when I flew LAX-IAH-EWR-ARN on CO a couple of years ago.

Other carriers do check documentation at the point of origin but not necessarily at boarding. DL checks at the time of check-in but not during boarding your domestic leg.

In case of DL, when you check-in, the boarding pass printed from the counter mentions very clearlt in big bold letters "DOCUMENTS OK".

Again, I am speaking from my experience with DL, they do it at check-in but not during boarding your domestic sector.

Many carriers do it at the gate now since OLCI allows people to bypass the check-in counters....

Same when I flew DL from JFK to the Caribbean this summer. Passport check at both JFK and ATL when we connected.
