Routes You Have Flown You Can No Longer Fly?

Fri Feb 15, 2013 4:20 pm

Have you flown any routes in the past that can no longer be done on any airline? As airlines go away there are always routes that go away too. Sometimes multiple carriers fly the same route, but if one carrier were to drop that route you could still take another.

An example of that would be STL-YYZ . I flew TW STL-YYZ once and that flight is long gone, but a passenger could still fly nonstop between the two on Air Canada Jazz.

The route that sticks out in my mind is STL-SGF. I flew that route on Ozark a bunch of times as a kid and I know TW kept it for a while. Today you can't fly directly between the two cities anymore.

I can think of many routes that are gone, but the STL-SGF route is the only one I can think of that I have flown on that is gone.

There must be many such routes as the range of widebodies has increased over the years; so- ANC, PIK and SNN are all airports that have lost a lot of passenger services over the years.

Plus, we can accuse the likes of FR dropping routes like erm, "ladies of the night's underwear".....

Personally I have flown these discontinued routes, possibly more:

1995 MAN to BOM & return with SQ (744)
1997 MEM to AMS with KL (MD11)
2000 LGW to TLV & return with BA (772)
2002 BSL to BHX & return with LX (Saab 2000; I think)
2002 LGW to DFW with BA (772)
2004 EDI to ZRH with Duo Airways (CRJ)
2004 ZRH to DFW with AA (763)
2005 PVG to VIE with OS (332)
2006 NCL to TRF with FR (738)
2006 NGB to SHA with MU (320)
2007 MME to LHR with BD (321)
2007 MME to WAW & return with W6 (320)
2007 MAN to SIN & return with SQ (77W)
2007 AYQ to PER with QF (717)
2008 NCL to PRG & return with U2 (73G)

Of all of these, the one that surprises me is the AYQ to PER route. Most of the others I can explain e.g. global downturn for MAN to SIN, high speed rail taking out NGB to SHA, LCCs (FR & U2) leaving after their incentives expire, lucrative slot warmer in the case of BD for MME at LHR.

Not a massive list, though a geographically broad one nonetheless.....

Cheers

Back in 2007 I flew OAK-IAH on CO not long before CO pulled out of OAK. WN does still fly OAK-HOU, so you can still fly to Houston but it's no longer possible to fly the exact same route I flew.

Flew MSY - PIE a few times in the early 80's on Northeastern.

When they went belly up, that route went with them and nobody has ever flown it since.

Around 1976 I flew SAA JFK-SID-JNB and back, 747-200. SID (Sal Island in Cape Verde) was mainly a fuel stop but I'm pretty sure SAA had 5th freedom rights to/from SID. No service on those sectors now.

A few other routes come to mind that I've flown that have no current service. There are probably a few others.

YYZ-BUF (US Air 733, 1989)
YYC-GTF (Western Airlines L-188 Electra, mid-'60s)
YYC-GEG (Hughes Airwest DC-9-30, early '70s)
YWG-DLH (North Central Convair 580, sometime in the '70s; first leg of a 6-stop flight that ended at ORD; I went as far as MKE, the 2nd last stop. All stops were in Wisconsin except DLH.)
YWG-LHR (AC around 1974. Operated YVR-YWG-LHR. I boarded at YVR. DC-8-63.)
YEG-AMS (CP)
YWG-AMS (CP)
YHZ-AMS (CP)
YYZ-MXP (CP)
YVR-LIM (CP DC-10-30, 1983. Routing YVR-LIM-SCL-EZE. I went all the way.)
YYZ-CPH (SAS, 763 sometime in the early to mid-1990s)
YYC-ZRH (AC, 763 in July 1996. AC operated YVR/YYC-ZRH about twice a week for about 2 years during that period, codeshared with Swissair. I think it was seasonal (summer only). They dropped the route when the Star Alliance was created in 1997 and FRA became more important.)

When I saw this thread this came immediately to mind. Have guests here in PER at the moment, and we decided to book that flight a few days ago, and I was very surprised that route is gone. Now, I either have to fly via the East Coast, or fly to ASP and drive, or drive directly from PER. None are ideal for a weekend trip....

Another for me is PER-AVV

Stopped when JQ decided to move PER flights to MEL.

I agree. Although 1000 plus miles by road isn't unusual in Australia, it still isn't my cup of tea.

My complete route in 2007 was MAN-SIN-MEL-SYD-CNS-AYQ-PER-MEL-SYD-CHC-SIN-MAN (all Boeing, by the way, including a 743).

This route just wouldn't have worked without the AYQ to PER segment, and I find it a little odd that CNS to AYQ survives, at least according to wiki last night.

Just realized how many interesting routes my "homeport" lost within the last years...

LBC-STN Ryanair
LBC-SNN Ryanair
STR-KTW Germanwings
VCE-KRK Volotea
KRK-SZZ OLT Express
POZ-TXL Jet Air
LPX-RIX Air Baltic
HAM-LPX Air Baltic
HAM-DRS Augsburg Airways, Cirrus
HAM-LEJ Cirrus
HAM-GDN LOT, OLT Jetair
HAM-KRK Eurolot
HAM-KBP Aerosvit
HAM-JFK Emirates
HAM-FMM TUIfly
HAM-TLL Estonian Air
HAJ-KLU TUIfly

Counting only sheduled flights, all withdrawn within the last 5-6 years...

Conclusion?! If you're owning an airline and have plans to open up a route to Hamburg, better put my name on the "no-fly list" if you want to have any success! That said I'm now fearing the worst for BM's new HAM-BRS service, me beeing aboard the inaugral flight last monday....

First is the year(s) I used the service, than the route and airline(s) I used.

1998
1999
2000
2002
2003
2004
2005
2007: KEF - BWI, FI 757-200. Icelandair now fly to Dulles instead as FI645/644 (I'm booked on 645 next month   )

1998: KEF - LUX, FI 757-200. Had been flown for over 40 years (with equipment such as DC-6s, DC-8s and CL-44s) as a continuation of the JFK service (FI614/615) but was replaced by service to Frankfurt in the early 2000s.

2000
2001
2002
2004: KEF - MCO, FI 757-200. Icelandair now fly to Sanford (SFB), but still keep the old flight numbers (688/689).

2005: SRQ - BWI, FL 717-200. Southwest decided to pull out of SRQ completely after buying AirTran. I miss seeing those "smiling A's" and the 717s flying over the golf courses already!

I think those are all, some of the flights I've taken with FI such as KEF-BCN are only flown in the highest season (July - August) but those are still operated on a scheduled basis though.

I take it that one-time charters, such as the KEF - AEY - MAN - CDG - MAN - AEY - KEF flight I took back in 2004 don't count.

regards,
Sveinn

From 2000 to 2008 (IIRC), JetBlue served ONT-JFK. No carrier flies ONT-JFK anymore nowadays. JetBlue also cut 2x daily flights to JFK to 1x daily from BUR and may even pull out completely soon (so sad...)!

Another one is in Taiwan, due to the development of High Speed Rail, most domestic flights within the main island have stopped (except for the routes to outer islands). I used to fly between TSA and TNN quite frequently on Far Eastern Air Transport (EF) on B757, TransAisa Airways (GE) on A321, and now-defunct airlines such as Makung Airlines (BAe-146) and Great China Airlines (I don't remember what equipment they used).

The first one that came to mind is ORF-BNA on a 727, when I was 9 months old. I remember it vividly

The other major one is MAN-LGW. I flew that route many times, but BA have decided to send it the way of the dodo.

I am also 99% sure that I flew EWR-SRQ at some point, maybe 1995/6? It would have been on CO, if anyone can confirm whether they actually flew that route at the time.

I also flew CO EWR-BGR at around the same time, probably 96. It was COEx on an AT4.

I'm not sure whether LGW-PHX-SAN counts, given that both still have flights to LHR, but I did that one back in 1998 on a BA DC-10.

Finally, BNE-NRT in 2009. JL 763, although there are rumors that JAL plan to resurrect the route.

PIE-MIA-PIE. I flew this sometime in the 1984-85 winter on a Convair 580 of Atlantic Gulf Airlines. The fare was $19 one way. I also flew this route on Air South on a 73S in the 1990s before they transferred their flights to TPA.

I also did ABE-AVP on US in a D9S (stopover on the way to PIT) and AVP-ABE (an extension of the ATL-AVP-ABE route) on EA on a D9S. I did ABE-BOS on an Allegheny Commuter F27 in the 1990s. I also flew ABE-MDT (on my way to ATL and connecting on to RSW) on a DL M88 and then got "bumped" because of an oversell so I caught the next flight which was routed MDT-ABE-ATL (yes, back to ABE) and got a $250 voucher for future travel. I know these routes are no longer flown. ATL-MDT, ATL-ABE and ATL-AVP are still flown but without the tag-on to ABE. Many routes inside of the state of PA are no longer flown-Reading and Lancaster were once connected to PHL and PIT on a daily basis.

I've done PIT-ABE-PIT on a D9S, 73S, 733, B11...this route is also no longer flown.

I flew CLE-ABE-CLE on a CO ERJ (connecting to TPA) which has been discontinued. EWR-ABE on an ATR was also a flight I miss. They now have bus service on the route.

I did SWF-PIE on a Southeast Airlines D9S. I flew TPA-PFN on Air New Orleans on a B99 in the mid 1980s.

My first flight to Europe was TPA-IAH-LGW on CO. IAH-LGW was flown with a CO 742. I know IAH-LHR is still flown but I don't think there are flights between IAH and LGW anymore.

I've also flown MXP-AOI on AZ M80 and NAP-FRA on a LH CRJ in the early 1990s. Neither of these routes are still flown, to the best of my knowledge.

As far as I can check online, they all seem to be discontinued routes. Some are possible with connections but some are impossible (from PIE the selections are limited).

Conclusion?! If you're owning an airline and have plans to open up a route to Hamburg, better put my name on the "no-fly list" if you want to have any success! That said I'm now fearing the worst for BM's new HAM-BRS service, me beeing aboard the inaugral flight last monday....

It's a shame we missed the E135 which was originally scheduled! I'll put that down to your luck.. I was on the inaugural BRS-HAM.

As for me anyway..

Gatwick - Plymouth
Bristol - Plymouth
Bristol - Newquay
Bristol - Manchester
Newquay - Stansted

I miss the DAY-TPA, MCO, FLL that Chataqua used to operate when I worked for OH back in 2005. I loved taking those. I also miss the hop from DAY-CVG to go to the stopover store down there.
"But this airplane has 4 engines, it's an entirely different kind of flying! Altogether"

I'm indeed having occasional periods in which I really attract lots and lots of bad luck
Got my boarding pass that day, it read 17A, almost returned it...

NOT, but still...

Seems as if I really got to get myself a seat on the "oil express" ABZ-EBJ to catch the 135.
Only downside is that damn flight tends to be a bit on the expensive side (mind, just for fun...).

Forgot one on my list.

GVA-BSL on LX. They dropped that route which had 3 or 4 daily Saab 2000s when they closed the former Crossair hub at BSL. Connecting at BSL was very convenient.

I can't think of too many. Just a few obvious ones that jump to my mind.

BRU-DFW
BRU-SIN
DAL-LAS
FTW-SAT
ITM-HKG
ITM-SEL
ITM-SFO
ITM-SIN
(back when, pre '94, ITM was KIX)

And I am already mourning EWR/LAX-SIN

I had 17A too. Hope it was kept adequately warmed.

They are launching FRA, HAJ and MUC with the E135 too which is more affordable.
