Countries With Widebody Domestic Service

Sat Mar 02, 2013 12:31 pm

Not seasonal (eg AF to Corsica for a few summer months) or the odd positioning flight (LH), but year-round domestic widebody service.

Some obvious ones:
USA (DL ATL-California, AA JFK-California)
CANADA (AC YYZ-YVR and YYZ-YUL with 767s and A330s)
AUSTRALIA (QF various transcon + MEL-SYD-BNE-CNS; DJ transcon A330s)
JAPAN (lots of JL, NH; + Air Do 767s)
BANGLADESH (DAC-CGP and -ZYL DC-10s and A310s, currently also 777-300 ZYL-DAC)
KSA (SV 777 and 747 Riyadh to Jeddah)
THAILAND (A300s to various islands and cities + 747s and 777s to Phuket)

anyone got any more?

IIRC GA runs a couple of daily A330s from CGK to DPS and SA does A340s between JNB and CPT
I want to live in an old and converted 727...

China has countless domestic widebody flights. The smallest I could find between SHA and PEK last summer on Air China was an A330, and CZ even uses the 380 domestically.

The Philippines is one: PR has widebody service to CEB, DVO and GES. In fact, CEB and DVO receive the entire PR fleet: from the smallest A319 to the largest 747.

It also flies the 777s on the MEX-TIJ portion and return of the Asia flights.

Vietnam - VN operates quite a few B772s and A330s between SGN and HAN.

In Canada, AC also operates a B763 between YYZ and YHZ to position for the YHZ-LHR route.

Quoting cedarjet (Thread starter):
AUSTRALIA (QF various transcon + MEL-SYD-BNE-CNS; DJ transcon A330s)

To the best of my knowledge, these are the current 767/A330 domestic flights in Australia:

Qantas:

SYD-BNE, SYD-MEL, SYD-PER, SYD-CNS, SYD-DRW
BNE-DRW, BNE-PER
MEL-PER

Virgin Australia:

SYD-PER
MEL-PER

Given that domestic tags to international flights are bookable, you could add:

Jetstar:

SYD-OOL, SYD-CNS
OOL-CNS

CANADA (AC YYZ-YVR and YYZ-YUL with 767s and A330s)

AC currently operates all 4 of their widebody models on YYZ-YVR-YYZ, including 2 daily 763s, 1 daily A333, 1 daily 77W (the YYZ-YVR leg of AC7/8 to/from HKG) and 1 daily 77L (AC33/34 to/from SYD).

YYZ-YVR is probably the only route in AC's system that regularly sees every aircraft type in their mainline fleet other than the E-175/190..

Didn't the 788 also fly to BLR?

Anyway, I flew DEL-BOM on an AI 77W, a continuation from JFK but the domestic leg is bookable. I think there are also 777 flights continuing from the States/Europe to Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chennai. Sure about BOM, pretty sure about Ahmedabad. Not sure on the other ones though. So that brings India as another country with domestic widebody service.

Iberia flies their 340s to the Canaries (TFN and I think also LPA) so that counts as domestic. I think they also operate BCN-MAD with their 346, continuing on to S-America. That counts for Spain.

AZ fly a 330 between FCO and MXP. Also, I think Neos and Air Italy have some domestic 767 flying. Not sure on that though.

I'm pretty sure that PIA fly their 747s and/or 777s inside Pakistan.

If you count Reunion and French Guyana as France, AF and UU fly widebodies domestically.

Same if you count Greenland as part of Denmark, that would leave SA)">GL's 330 flights from SFJ to CPH as domestic.

I don't recall any more domestic WB services.

So is this the complete list of domestic widebody services?

USA - SA)">UA, SA)">AA, SA)">DL, US and SA)">HA.
Canada - AC.
Australia - QF, VA and 3K.
Japan - NH, JL and Air Do.
Bangladesh - BG.
Saudi Arabia - SV.
Thailand - TG and Orient Thai.
Indonesia - GA.
South Africa - SA.
China - CA, MU, CZ. Should we count CX and KA in here?
Russia - SU, UN.
South Korea - KE, OZ? One or both?
UK - BA.
Philippines - PR.
Mexico - AM.
Brazil - JJ.
Vietnam - VN.
Portugal - S4, TP.
Chile - LA.
India - AI. Do 9W operate WBs domestically?
Spain - IB.
Italy - AZ.
Pakistan - PK.
(France - AF, UU. )
(Denmark - SA)">GL. )

Also, do MH operate their A330s inside Malaysia? I was also wondering if AV maybe operate inside Colombia with their 330s.

Regards,
Sveinn

JQ, NOT 3K, that is a Singapore airline that cannot fly domestically in Australia.

I forgot one country with countless domestic widebody flights: Iran! IR and M5 operate many domestic services with A300s and B747s.

So, corrections/add-ons from the previous list:

Australia - QF, VA, JQ.
Iran - IR, M5.

Of course, Iran! How forgetful of me - IR and W5 both fly lots of daily A300s (mostly B2 and B4) and often 747s (including the 747SP) - indeed one of their 747s (EP-IAI) was acquired quite recently just to do domestic + Jeddah. Also Saha / Meraj fly AB6, and Iran Air Tours gave their A300B4s to Iran Air but recently acquired an A310 from Turkey. So that's more widebody service than any other Asian country outside Japan and China.

I think some Cubana Il-96s operate Varadero to Havana as a tag-on to international services from Europe, but to qualify for our list, they need to be bookable and preferably in both directions - anyone know?

Some others:

RAM in Morocco fly the 763 on CMN-RAK, sometimes with the 744 too.
Air Astana fly the 763 domestically on TSE-ALA, plus some other routes.
Air France fly several domestic widebody routes... if you count the territories, which many do.

Bookable in one direction a few years ago, but not the other. Not sure about now.

And not just French territories like French Polynesia (Tahiti) and New Caledonia, but also to Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana and Reunion which are French departments and fully part of France and part of the EU., no different than Hawaii and Alaska being fully part of the U.S.

Perhaps in the past, but there certainly aren't any 767s into CBR these days. They do see plenty of big military aircraft and charters, but nothing in scheduled service.

QF used to fly a 767 once a day (maybe only on certain days?) to MEL. I saw it there a couple of times. I've forgotten the gate numbers in the old terminal, but it was too big to park on one of the gates with jetways so parked down the end of the terminal with the props. They had certainly ceased 767 service before moving to the new terminal, so I'm thinking it must have ended sometime in winter 2010.

This does raise a question I've often wondered. At peak times QF run a 737 from CBR to SYD, and then a Q400 5 or 10 minutes later. Why not just use a 767???

Interesting -- I didn't realise there had been regular service so recently. I could have sworn (though it could just be my brain playing tricks) that I saw 767 markings at one of the gates in the new terminal recently, though, so perhaps they could resume services?

Quoting RyanairGuru (Reply 25):

QF's schedule is really strange in the evenings out of CBR -- 4 departures (2 jets, 2 props) between 4-5pm, but only 2 more departures (1 jet, 1 prop) in the next 2 hours till 6:55pm which I would have thought would be the busier period.

Re using the 767, I imagine it comes down to J vs Y demand, probably. The only people who fly J on this route are politicians, so they're probably better off using the J capacity elsewhere. It also gives them great flexibility to quickly cut demand to match supply through the week (as QF seems to love doing -- they seem to cancel at least one flight most days) without creating major rescheduling dramas for passengers.

Christ! Your absolutely right! How did that one slip through the net without anyone noticing?!?

And loads look good, looking 7 days from now on 12/3 QF804 only has Fully Flexible Y and Business Class left. I don't recall ever seeing that before so long before departure.

So CBR-MEL is another domestic widebody flight for the purposes of this thread.
