LH First Class - Who Is Using It?

Mon Mar 04, 2013 4:09 pm

As we all know First Class tickets are quite expensive. So my question is rather simple. Who is willing to pay this amount of money. Take LH as an example. Who is flying First Class to Denver? I can imagine that movie stars, soccer stars or other celebrities might use LH out of LAX or MIA as California and Florida are quite popular among Germany‘ s rich and beautiful. But there are so many other destinations left...What are the occupancy rates on individual rates?

keep in mind that not every destination has F and that also many seats are being "bought" as upgrades/with miles.

that said, I'm neither a movie star nor any other celebrity but have been in F on FRA-DEN-FRA among many other routes countless times... (would guess, around 50 F trips on LH alone during the last 10 years)

on that specific route, load factor is ~ 50% based on my experience, ORD was always full e.g. (though thats just my stats, no official load factors)

Large corporations often get pre-negotiated 30-50% discounts on first/biz. It's not a huge expense if it keeps your most valued employees happy and rested.

I remember flying to DEN in F and I was the only passenger in the cabin. Plus I was not feeling well and so I slept almost the entire flight. My entire food intake were two glasses of sparkling mineral water and some macademia nuts. Notwithstanding my non-consumption the cabin crew put in place the full drinks buffet.

There were also some other routes where I was the only pax in Lufthansa F. MUC-DXB, DOH-FRA, BOS-MUC. Other routes always full: JFK, IAD, GRU, HKG...

Tickets are bought by the categories of people you mention, although quite a number of them also use private planes. But there are artists, wealthy people on a private trip, high ranking executives (think C-level of Fortune 500 companies), partners in certain law firms or strategy consulting firms, SME business owners that go back and forth between two places a lot (e.g. weekly Munich-Shanghai return) and who do it to get some decent sleep. Plus don't forget that F tickets are a lot less expensive when bought in certain markets outside of Europe.

Plus all the mileage cowboys of LH's own frequent flyer programme and those from US-based frequent flyer programs using upgrade vouchers.

I do repeat business with a client who I meet in FRA and then in BUE the same week. Everytime we signed a contract for me to work with that company I would estipulate that in those cases, it would be LH F on all flights.

Otherwise most of the time I fly C.

Some years ago it was common for certain carriers, especially U.S. carriers whose premium products were considered less desirable, to negotiate corporate discounts that permitted travel in F class at the J fare, and travel in J class at the unrestricted Y fare.

LA Times just had a story about a couple that took a 2-week around-the-world trip in over the holidays.
One of the carriers they flew was LH between IAD and FRA in F.
