If 9/11 never happened. The economy never tanked and fuel prices never rose
what would the airline industry be like today?

More airlines would still be around, that's for sure, less lay-offs, and while fuel prices would've still gone up, it wouldn't be near as dramatic changes and the prices wouldn't be as high as they are now.

Besides TWA being bought out before any of this happened.
What would other airlines be like today in general. Would there still
be any airline mergers?

Airlines mergers have existed practically since airlines began. While 9/11 certainly fueled a change, the changes would eventually have happened anyway.

Security theater wouldn't exist, either. We could take water on board, pass through the detector with jackets and shoes on, and life would generally be easier.
