777s And 346 On Intra-European Flights?

Wed Mar 13, 2013 5:17 pm

Sorry, my returning question:

Is there a chance to fly a 777 within Europe? One is 773 SQ MAN-MUC (and I do hope to test it someday). Anything more?   In 2012, KE was flying MAD-AMS on 772, but the tickets were a bit more expensive (similarly for KE's VIE-ZRH on 744 in 2012).

As for 346... In 2012 I had a LHR-MAD booked (IB), but there was a replacement: 343 flew instead. It was a nice fligth anyway,   my first flight on a 340. (The flight was apparently full in Y, yet, as you can see, a dozen or two of passengers were missing to make such a replacement impossible!) I hoped to have another try in some near future - but it seems that IB has withdrawn 346s from the route. So... not really likely to be able to have a European flight on a 346, huh?... (Does IB still fly 346s, and/or 343s, to the Canaries?)

PS. My second flight on a 343 was next day, MAD-FRA by LA. Also very nice (and also full in Y, of course part of the passengers were flying from SCL), with views of the Pyrenees and the Alps (BTW, I was wondering why the route was so much "bent" to the south; this was planned, because it was shown on the map on PTV - and it was great to see the mountains.)

This might not reflect some more recent changes but there you go ...

The only 346 I could find is on LHR MAD by IB.

As for 777, there are three I could find:
CPH OSL PK 772
MXP CDG PK 772
MAN MUC SQ 77W

Is it possible to book these flights?

Yes, the're shown in reservations systems as bookable. MXP-CDG is twice a week and CPH-OSL is only once a week.

I think for the time being at least the 346/343 has been replaced by the new A333s - don't know if this is a short term thing for familiarisation with the new plane type or whether the 340s have been taken off the route permanently.

LA operate A340s between MAD-FRA I believe, as I was looking a doing a LHR-MAD-FRA-LHR trip to pick up a few more OW FF credits towards a bonus.

I know that LA are about to [if they haven't already] drop the MAD-FRA tag on from SCL - so you might be too late for that one.

I did LHR-IB-MAD-LA-FRA in 2012.

You're gonna earn the points quickly.   IB (nor BA) have not yet (again: this was the state of matters in 2012) grown up to drop on the route MAD-LHR-MAD (or vv.) the pathological scheme "OW tickets several times *more expensive* than Sunday rule RT tickets". Luckily, LA is (was in 2012, I have not checked now) more into normal, i.e. the segment MAD-FRA stood about 150 USD then.

Isn't that temporary, due to the problems with 787? LA was replacing (or going to replace) 343 by 787 on the route SCL-MAD-FRA. Let's hope the 787 will fly again quickly...

My understanding was that FRA was scheduled to be dropped at the time that the 787 was introduced rather than it being dropped as a consequence of the 787 problems. One theory I read was that by dropping the FRA tag it would give more turnaround time at MAD during a period when LA and MAD were getting used to 787 operations.
