Amtrak And United At Newark?

Thu Mar 28, 2013 6:54 am

I was just wondering if you were flying (hypothetically) from Europe City A or New England city A to a Washington area airport with a stop in Newark and you miss your connecting flight or decided to give up your seat on the plane for a voucher could United book you on an Amtrak train from the Newark Airport Station to DC Union Station? Or any other station like Philly 30th street or any other station on the Northeast Corridor (if the train stops at it)? If United is code-sharing with Amtrak then this could work right? I've seen passengers re-booked on other airlines so could it work for Amtrak?
Just curious.

I have been booked by UA on Amtrak between EWR and Philadelphia. The Amtrak portion is given a UA flight number and you receive FF miles for it. Since UA is dropping flights between PHL and EWR this will be the only UA transport between the two airports. I do not know if they will do it for DC, but Philly Amtrak station even has it s own "airport" code.

It is perhaps the only airport in the US with an intemodal regional hub right next to it.

JFK also has it, but it lies on Long Island lines

EWR is awesome because it actually lies on lines that stretch up and down the east coast...and high speed down to DC.

Sadly, the PA connected this station to EWR with a garbage tink-a-toy monorail system that makes the whole process a lot slower than necessary

UA will connect you on Amtrak to a couple of cities in CT, Wilmington and Phily...you can earn miles if you are traveling on Acela between NYC and BOS or WAS but I don't think you can connect to those cities at EWR. UA also has a ticket desk at Penn Station....

EWR airtrain is efficient enough, travel time is no longer than it is from any terminal to Jamaica with the JFK airtrain.

It's actually shorter travel time than JFK.

So if I wanted to give up my seat for a voucher, could I just ask to take the train to WAS instead of take a later flight or stay overnight in EWR?

There is no UA codeshare on Amtrak from EWR to WAS, so no you cannot do that.

No its for the closer cities

From Uniteds Website:

Amtrak provides connecting service on Northeast Regional and Keystone Service trains between Philadelphia, Wilmington, Stamford and New Haven to anywhere United Airlines flies from Newark International Airport

They decided that before the UA/AA merger and it wasn't clear US would be leaving star. UA can still rely on US 6 ish flights daily on the route for some time and connect people well. I bet you once they dont have those flights UA adds them back for next summer or down the road. They have tried to cut PHL before and added it back. US added more EWR-PHL and UA cancelled i am sure that wasn't a coincidence.

But UA can route most PHL based pax looking to fly UA, but not wanting to take a train, via IAD or ORD, without using up EWR slots. CO only had EWR, CLE and IAH and routing via IAH was too far, and CLE didn't have the destinations.

I don't know about the few destinations offered via EWR not available via IAD or ORD, like BOM, if it's worthwhile for slots to be used by UA for PHL-EWR. Many would rather just drive up to EWR rather than take an Amtrak train or fly a RJET from PHL up to EWR.

You could make an argument for the MKE Amtrak station (code MKA) on the Hiawatha line. And the BWI Amtrak station on the NEC. Although both of those lack a wide range of options beyond the single rail line.

Europe tons of unique cities, canada cities like Quebec, Halifax, Moncton, St Johns, Ottawa get high fares and its nice to have a link to all the EWR has to offer. For now US 6/5 daiy flights will work just fine but down the road i could see it come back again like they already did.

The Express flights between PHL and EWR were totally unreliable. The agents at PHL always said to take the train and not the Express.

Actually, even for the IAD to EWR flight, at least on two occasions I have ahad to bail at IAD and take thet rain instead, since UA/CO could give no reliable information on when I might make it to EWR on the flight that I was originally booked on. I basically chose to eat the railfare myself and make it home more predictably than what IA/CO was able to offer. For that reason, I so wish that UA had codeshare even from Washington DC, but the current situation with connecting from IAD to WAS (Union Station) is not conducive to any such arrangement.
