787 Flight Bookable On UA?

Thu Mar 28, 2013 11:21 pm

Greetings,

Apologize if this was previously discussed on one of the 1,000+ 787 threads already, but since I didn't have time to read through ALL of them...

Was checking on tickets for my annual summer trip to Colorado today and noticed that on Saturday, June 29, 2013, UA 94 IAH-DEN, according to the UA website, will be operated by a 787. Now I know that UA had previously announced domestic routes that would be flown by the 787, mainly between hubs for crew familiarization, but that was before the problems that resulted in the 787 fleet being grounded. So my question is, could this be an overlooked error on UA's website (i.e. the flight was "loaded in the system" before the fleet was grounded and they forgot to remove it) or does UA actually think the 787's might be flying again by the end of June (which is all fairness is still 3 months away)?

If its the former, I will book the ticket for sure. If not, I might still book it then just be (mildly) disappointed when they sub a 762 or 753 for the flight because the Dreamliner is still grounded.

Honest answers/guesses/hypothesis appreciated...sarcastic answers will be graded and jeered/commended as time permits...

I would pick up the phone and call United reservations (novel idea, I know), and ask.

All the airlines with 787s have left the aircraft in their schedule past a certain date. As the date approaches, they will sub another aircraft if they need to.

The B787 has been removed from the schedule through the end of May due to the grounding.

The DEN-NRT launch was delayed until May 12th IIRC.

This will obviously change as we find out when the B787 can start flying again.

LAN hasn't reloaded any 787 flights on its website as yet. However, LAN's timetable shows that the 767 will be deployed on the SCL-MAD-FRA route starting on 30JUN13. Followed by:

*The exact model of plane may vary for operational reasons.

Not such a novel idea if you don't have elite status. You will get India, and they don't know anything. Before I got status, I called them a few times and they did not know what a tailship number was. No surprise as most of them have probably never been on a plane, let alone a United flight.

It looks as if the DEN-NRT flight is now pushed back to June 10......

DEN has waited over 10+ years and paid some $22M to finally get this nonstop flight..... I guess a month or two more now is just to be expected......

Thank you...that was going to be my next guess. What aircraft would be most suitable to substitute for the 787 (assuming all seats are booked when the substitution is made)...a 763?

Something tells me the response from the reservation agent would go something like, "Well my computer says its going to be a 787..."

however, the last part of your comment...

Oh what the heck...I might as well book it and just take my chances...if the Dreamliner is flying again, score...if not, well, I'm sure a 753 or a 762 would be just fine too...I did notice in a picture on A.net a few weeks ago that a 762 was being used to sub for the 787 on the IAH-LAX route...wouldn't mind flying on a "classic" 762 one more time before they are all gone.

I think UA will delay the start of the DEN-NRT route until they have a 787 available as they have said they have no suitable substitute airframes available. The IAH-DEN might be the leg to get the 787 to DEN so it can depart for NRT.

I think you should be pretty safe booking your flight.

I booked it...might as well give it a try.

As for the 787 itself, for any of you that may know, when it comes to choosing my seat, are there are "window seats" on the airplane that are not really window seats? I've noticed on pictures of UA's 787's that there are several "gaps" where a window should be (I know this is the case where inside the aircraft there isn't a seat but a galley or a lavatory) but it seems in some of the pictures towards the back of the airplace in the economy section that there are a few places where there is no window and the seat map on the UA website shows a seat should be there. I don't want to select what I think is going to be a window seat only to get on the aircraft and find myself staring at a wall, which is what happend to me a few years ago on an LX RJ100 from NCE-ZRH...I thought I was going to have an amazing view out of my window seat (just forward of the wing) of the Alps and instead when I got on the airplane I didn't have a window, just a wall (which I assume was due to a structural part of the aircraft that didn't allow for a window)...bummer.

Thanks in advance...

Heard from a friend who was in recurrent training yesteday that DEN-NRT will be the first B788 flight once it is certified, again. IIRC the new and latest projected date was June 16th.
