LHR - BNE Best Options?

Thu Apr 04, 2013 6:14 pm

Hey fellas, and ladies, if by some miracle there is a lady resident at A.Net.

I need to head over to Brisbane at the end of April, then coming back mid-late May.

Having searched the comparison sites like Kayak and SkyScanner, i've found that it comes down to choosing between paying a couple of hundred quid less, or spending an inordinate amount of time at a stop-over airport.

China Southern are currently the lowest fair, at £661, for LHR-CAN-BNE and return. The problem is, the outbound flight is fine, only having a 3 hour and 40 minute layover, but the return flight has a 16 hour layover. The other option with China Southern, is the same outbound, but flying BNE-CAN-AMS-LHR on the return, with only a 6 hour stop at CAN. This option is over £100 more expensive though.

The price then shoots to over £800 for the likes of EY on the LHR-AUH-SIN-BNE route, or BA with their LHR-HKG-BNE and LHR-SIN-BNE option. Both with 3-6 hour stopovers. Then the likes of EK/QF offer LHR-DXB-MEL-BNE for over £850, with the only LHR-DXB-BNE option over £1000.

Any ideas which to plump for? CZ is by far the cheapest, but from what it looks like their IFE is poor, and there is a 16 hour wait at CAN. I'd like to try BA's 77W to HKG, but i don't want to try their 744 back from SIN.

What would you do?

Cheers

Alex.

China Southern may be cheap, but you will get what you pay for with them.

Another suggestion with minimal stop over is Malaysia Airlines. a380 on long hauls and service is always good.

Not sure on price at such short notice.

The waiting time between LHR-KUL and KUL-BNE with MH is 16 hours also, only 4 on the return. They're about BA prices too.

I don't know what you're looking at but I can find one with a 2 hour layover in KUL on the way to BNE. MH3 to MH135. 4hr 20 on the return.
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

Like NZ107 said, there are days when you can get a short layover. But even with a 16 hour layover, KL has a great transit hotel, and a great airport hotel as well. Spend a day in KL.

Mind you it seems you were looking for a cheaper option, so adding hotel bills probably wont help.

Hi Alex,

Are you restricted to some dates ? Might be helpful to add your (desired) travel dates so we can look for fares

Hey,

Ideally, it'd be departing between the 15th and the 30th of April. I've decided i'm going to fly one way, then book the return flight when i'm out there, as i will probably be moving around Aus, so the return might be from somewhere other than BNE.

Cheers buddy

Booking two one-way tickets might be expensive, especially if you book on a short notice... Alternative would be booking a return trip and add an one-way domestic flight to go back to your port of entry.
Enjoy your trip

As airtrainer mentioned, two one ways will be expensive, particularly leaving Australia. Malaysian do sometimes offer a reasonable one way fares, but I would agree with their suggestion of the one way domestic. They can be cheap, and may save you hundreds of dollars.

Personally I would fly LHR-LAX-BNE or LHR-DFW-BNE on BA/QF with a layover in LAX or DFW.
United: please start SYD-IAH!

You can also book an "open jaw" ticket, but of course you would have to decide in advance on where you will leave Australia. SOMETIMES open jaws are actually cheaper than returns (at least between Australia & Europe).

Another point, look at UA via SFO/LAX OR BOTH. I found a SYD-LHR fare SYD-SFO-LHR-SFO-LAX-SYD for just over $A1500 , it was for late August admittedly. BUT the fare was cheaper with a couple of days stop over than without.

CX, SQ, QF, MH are the only ones I would fly. It may be more money but its a hell of a long flight and worth the extra $

Yeah i think i'm going to go for MH. Chance to check out the 380, and a pretty short connection too. Cheers everyone.

I would strongly recommend getting the cheapest possible flights LHR-SIN-LHR and then look at Scoot from there to OOL, Gold Coast? I flew them last month and they were absolultely fine, and their fares are great.

Gold Coast Airport was about 1hr from Brisbane.
Next Up: Back to the US - Charlotte & Kansas City

NO. Scoot does cancel flights and if you miss the connection in SIN you are in huge trouble

I would have chosen China Southern for cheaper fares, and (to me) the trying of a new airline, especially an Asian one... then check how to enjoy a-16-hour-layover at CAN   then we owe you a trip report :-P
