25 Years Since British Caledonian Ceased

Sat Apr 06, 2013 10:29 am

This month it is 25 years since British Caledonian Airways (BR) ceased to exist in April 1988, after it was taken over by British Airways.

Although I never had the chance to fly BR, I've long been fascinated by it. I love its distinctive purple and gold livery featuring a lion on the tail. For me, it's one of the iconic airlines of the 1970s and 1980s. Based in London Gatwick, its fleet included DC-10s, A310s and B747-200s and served an impressive set of destinations, including Dubai, New York and Hong Kong.

Have you flown BR? What was its service like? I'm interested in hearing about your experiences.

I miss them too. Growing up in the London area I often got to see their aircraft as a Kid in LGW. I loved the uniforms and the livery.

I will always think of this when I remember them with fondness. :

Days never to be repeated and Im glad I was around to see them briefly before they became a memory.

But later Caledonian Airways (British Airtours) continued till the late 90s with almost same livery as the legendary BCAL

I haven't flown with BCal, but during the '80s I've heard some pretty positive comments from people who had traveled with BR. I remember they said the quality of service was quite better compared to Bloody Awful.

Don't forget the BAC 1-11s too.

I agree with what you've said 110%, I was mortified when BA took over them. From what I recall they did have a very good reputation, having flown on BMA in the early 80s I think they were the same....service was their strong point. I think pre-privatisation BA were a bit how do you put it, typical of a national carrier "take it or leave it" attitude. (Bloody Awful ......says it all!)

But BCal were a bit special I think. I always thought UTA were the same to Air France, as BCal were to BA.

They ordered the original A320s too that BA took over the G-BUSB range - did any of them appear in BCal colours?

BCal also used to operate a helicopter system to/from LHR from LGW....(showing my age now)...before the M25 was finished.

Then there was the adverts on TV....based on the Californian Girls theme aka Caledonian Girls

I wonder what BCal would be doing now if they were still going? Probably much the same, A330s and A340s, some B744s and the A320s. Not sure Virgin would be the carrier it is today, had BCal still be around. Too much home ground competition.
