Air Transat: What To Expect?

Fri Apr 12, 2013 3:39 pm

Checking all the ways for the best combination to fly from Tunis to Saskatoon, GDS and all search engines are giving me almost the same suggestions; Star Alliance with Lufthansa & Air Canada, although i'm sure i can get even better offer with Turkish through IST but their booking system doesn't accept YXE and then the price rises significantly just open selection ! I have even found an excellent deal with QR routing TUN-DOH-YUL and then Westjet but the date wasn't convenient... so i went to fetch on the well known cheap Canadian airline Air Transat, and i wasn't disappointed. A one-way FCO-YYZ for 235$   which is an ironic fare comparing to the TUN-FCO with Tunisair for 134$ i should also book and also comparing to the YYZ-YXE on Westjet for 510$. By the way fares in the U.S. and Canada are much higher than in Europe !

So let's get back to Air Transat and its given fare, i've been asked to choose a seat for an extra 40$ or Option Plus package for almost 80$ ! Does this mean that i can not ask the check-in agent for a window seat if i do not select one during booking ? Also what about meals ? Are they payable as well !

I have flown Air Transat on two trips to Canada in the last year, the most recent in January.

They are a "vacation" airline and the product reflects that. The A330-200s are 9 abreast and the A330-300s 8 abreast. I would say go for it. The refurbished product is very good. Baggage and meals are included as is wine with the meal.

See the excellent: Air Transat -New Cabin (LGW-YYZ-LGW) + Photos (by FlyKev Jun 24 2012 in Trip Reports) for reference.

Go for it, though it will be cramped if you are a little "larger" around the butt or waist   Not so much the pitch, but the width of the seats in the 9 abreast 332 and the 310.

We have used them YVR-LGW a few times now, of course I would prefer to fly upstairs with BA, but the savings are too huge to ignore.

This is a 10 hour flight of course which is longer than yours, but we got two meals included in the fare, no BOB. Soft drinks are complimentary as is a glass of wine with your dinner (you have to pay for other alcohol) and they frequently come round the cabin with water (more than AC...) and they have little extras like candies and towels which you would not really expect for the fare paid. The cabin service is on a par with AC and the food is no worse. In fact, I find the cabin crew a lot friendlier than AC.

Bag allowance is 20 kgs which we have never exceeded and you get 10 kgs of cabin luggage too (only thing is good luck stowing it if you are one of the last to board).

Punctuallity is generally pretty good, though you do have to watch out for schedule changes and additional stops en route, though FCO-YYZ you will probably be OK. My last LGW-YVR, they brought the flight forward 3 hours and stopped in MAN, so I had to get to the airport at 6am rather than a leisurely 9am which I booked it for and then arrived later... my only gripe with them though.

The fleet is slowly being updated with PTV's and AVOD, the selection is not great, but more than enough to keep you entertained for the required time. Not been on the new refurb yet, but it looks pretty good considering the price you are paying.

If you're set on a window seat I would book it in advance - since it's a 'vacation'-oriented airline, I find that most PAX book theirs in advance, so the selection at check-in is limited. That said, if you don't book a window seat there's nothing stopping you from getting one at check in if there are any available.

If you book the TS flight let us know when you'll fly. Hopefully you will be on a newly configured aircraft.

You are misinterpreting the announcement. Condor is offering connecting flights to Saskatoon through their interline agreement with WestJet, not direct flights.

And if you book the TS ticket, when arriving at terminal 3 after clearing customs and heading to the connecting flights area there's almost always a WS agent usually through connecting US to Canadian destination pax baggage. Its a quick tap on the keyboard and you'll be upstairs clearing customs for beautiful YXE.

I didn't find anything wrong with TS last year (my report is linked above); and I am flying with them again in October because once again they smoked the competition on price.
Legroom was as good as VS, seat width - ok a little narrow but not too bad (and this is from someone who needs to lose a bit of weight) and the food / service was more than acceptable.

The good news on their refurbishments is that they aim to have all (or almost all) the A330s refurbished by October - so there is an increasing chance of their improved cabin which is really good.

Option plus may be worth while if you are planning to preselect a seat, want a bit more luggage, priority boarding, a comfort kit and an extra snack / alcoholic drink onboard.
I usually just prebook my seat as I like to know where I am sitting, however there should be a good enough selection left on the day so long as your early to check it; or are eligible for their online check in service.

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

Kev.
