Chances Of Not Making 3 Hours Connection In IAD

Wed Apr 24, 2013 10:26 am

Hi everybody,

I have an upcoming flight in June from ZRH to SLC via IAD on UA, arrival will be 1500 hours on UA 937 connecting to UA 645 leaving 1756 hours. I actually thought that a close to three hour layover would be enough but people started to scare me that that will be a close call. So any experiences from learned a.netters in IAD, will I have good chances to make my flight to SLC or should I prepare for spending the night in IAD?

You'll probably end up sitting around for hours in IAD wandering what all the worrying was about. Seems like plenty of time.

Unless your flight to IAD is heavily delayed, you should be fine. That said, it's always a good idea to carry the essentials for an unexpected night in some airport hotel in your hand luggage.

That is SOP when I am travelling  . Thanks for the encouraging words!

Hope it all works out fine. Probably will.

All depends on delays at US immigration, which can be severe at IAD. Try to be off quickly to get up to the head of the line.
IAD is kind of unfriendly for a quick transit, narrow corridors with lots of passengers, with few or no moving walkways. Also go on the web and note the peculiar gate numbering convention at IAD which does not help.

Shouldn't be a problem. It is an awful airport, that I hate flying into, but there it is.

There is also a sandwich restaurant with a very unusual name in the United C/D Terminal that is great.

Also keep in mind that intercontinental flights usually arrive half an hour or even an hour earlier than scheduled. This will give you an even longer layover. If you're still worried, try sitting close to the front and try to pass some people while walking from the plane to immigration. Sometimes a couple of minutes earlier at the immigration line results in half an hour or more time saved.

UA has its own separate FIS in terminal C/D. If it is a UA to UA connection you should be fine...

Since girlfriend and me decided to fork out the 100$ for Economy-Plus that's a done deal. And a couple of inches of more legroom is never a bad thing  .

If you leg it to immigration and don't waste time in the lavatory, you'll probably beat your bags to the carousel.

Yeah, it is quite possible. Just go as fast as possible in immigration, and you'll find yourself with more than an hour to spend at IAD. Good Luck!

Echo other posts regarding hurrying off the plane and to immigration.

When I get off the plane, at any international arrival airport, I bypass the line or the escalator and scury up/down the stairs. Usually gets me in front of 2 dozen right there.
