Older Folks On WN

Wed Apr 24, 2013 5:19 pm

My Mom and Dad will traveling on WN. They are on their 80's, but still quite active. Does WN make any provision in their boarding process for folks who 'need a little extra time down the jetway'?

Thanks in advance for any info, I'd like to let them know what to expect.

Go to the check-in counter before the flight and explain the situation. They will get a special envelope for their boarding passes and will board first, regardless of check-in number.

Yeah they will get a blue ticket jacket. I just flew on SWA last weekend and saw a bunch of older people in PHX that had them.

My experience in PHX is that half the plane will have blue ticket jackets and wheel chairs. The snowbirds returning north for the summer make florida look like a youth camp.

Doubt it. Unless Arizona also earned the moniker "Gods waiting room", then Florida has that won by a long shot.

A few years ago I had an elderly aunt & uncle fly MDW-PHX-SNA on Southwest. My aunt has mobility problems and cannot walk long distances and sometimes requires the use of a wheelchair. I booked the trip for them and called Southwest reservations shortly after I booked to see if they could accommodate my aunt's special needs.
They were told to meet a special agent at MDW by the ticket counter.

At the end of the trip my relatives had nothing but wonderful things to say about how they were treated by Southwest employees.
Especially since they had a plane change at PHX. They were escorted all the way through the connection and they said the Southwest agents could not have been more helpful. At SNA I believe they use a special kind of lift to get wheelchair passengers on the plane and my aunt was a little nervous by this, but the agent calmed her fears and made it as easy going as possible for them. About a month later they flew SNA-PHX-MDW and they experienced the same nice treatment on the return trip too.

Great job Southwest!

A LOT.

It is astonishing how many wheelchairs get on (especially in Florida and LAS markets) and how few get off. We call it "being healed," as they need the wheelchair to preboard, but miraculously can walk off just fine when arriving, leaving sometimes multiple wheelchair pushers in the jetway with nobody to pick up. It happens everyday, and on almost every flight to certain destinations (MIA or RSW, anyone?) Of course many people genuinely do need them, and we're happy to procure them for anyone who needs one.
