United Upgrades At Gate?

Sat Apr 27, 2013 9:06 pm

I was just wondering if United is one of those airlines that if there is a first class seat available, the gate agent will ask passengers if they want to upgrade to first for a small fee, usually around $50-$100. I've been on US Airways, Alaska, and American, and they have asked passengers if they want to upgrade and some passengers do. I haven't upgraded because I think it's kinda of a waste, but this year, I'm flying 2 red eyes on United and so far only about 2 first class seats have been bought, so there could be some open ones when I fly. Also if some United EconomyPlus seats are available, would you recommend them, or are they just as bad as regular economy?

UA doesn't offer the ability to upgrade at the gate. Any open seats are given to elite customers on the automatic upgrade list. If there are still open premium seats after the upgrade list is exhausted, standby travelers are next in line. Those two redeye flights you're booked on....don't worry, they'll be full by the time you're ready to travel.

So would you recommend I upgrade to Premium economy now for about $50?

United's Complimentary Premier Upgrade program is so extensive, there is rarely a seat in F available for everyday, non Mileage Plus members.
However, if there is such a seat, it is offered at the check in kiosk, for whatever United feels is a fair fare. Supposedly, they charge the difference between the ticketed fare code, and the cheapest F fare bucket. But we've all heard of (and some of us seen) offers to upgrade for as little as $20, which United promises is a "glitch".

Does that answer your question?

If you're a premier, then no- you can get it at check in for free. If you're NOT an elite traveler, then yes, book the seat you want now.

Actually, UA does offer upgrades for cash, both in advance and at the gate. It's a bone of contention with elites, as it seems to trump elite chances for upgrades.

For a red-eye (transcontinental?), however, it will be more than $50-$100.

The OP mentions that two seats are sold. Where is this info from?
