Going To UAE And Turkey

Mon Apr 29, 2013 12:57 am

Hi all

Back for the best advice!
I am travelling with my wife in late september/early october for our vacations. I am planning on taking her to Turkey which has been her wish for a lifetime. Since we are going all the way there (we live in BOG), I thought we could hop to DXB and/or AUH (we are flying F)

The question is, we can either fly BOG-GRU/JFK-DXB/AUH (EX or EY). We don´t mind to stop in GRU or JFK, its almost the same flight time and we have AV miles for the J A330 flight to either destination.
1. There is a $10k difference between flying GRU-DXB and JFK-DXB but GRU sees 77W and JFK gets A380, is that $10.000 difference worth it?
2. Would you rather fly EK or EY First?
3. Would you rather fly QR and go through DOH? or perhaps TK?

I know only TK would give us miles (we are AV/Star gold), but we have always wanted to try gulf carriers, unless ANet believes TK F is superior to EK/EY/QR F

Thanks for the input!

IMO no, unless you'd pay that much for a shower in the air. That's about all the difference.

TK doesn't have F, only J.
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

Do you prefer EK, EY or QR?

I would go with EY over EK! They've got a great chef service in F and have a consistent product across the fleet. Their F suits are also much nicer and more stylish than those of EK.

Transiting in AUH is very easy in the new terminal and the F lounge looks very nice.

The only factor that EY is lacking vs EK is IFE - EY generally only shows action/thriller movies, a bit sparse in other genres (I'm assuming due to censorship?).

Personally I prefer Etihad's style over that of Emirates, I feel it's more tastefully done and the small features like the chef in F are a great touch.

If you're dead set on visiting Dubai, they offer an efficient chauffeur service and arriving in AUH is much easier than DXB in terms of immigration lines and baggage claim.

Is there much of a price difference between the two?

Yes TK does not have F, but personally I'd save the money and maybe look at doing GRU-IST with stop over then IST-DXB.

You can keep the money to spend on hotels, food, or shopping imo.

For EK, personally I would not pay a premium, let alone $10,000 simply to fly the A380.

Not an important factor, I ussually carry my own IFE (ipad).

The difference between EY GRU-AUH and EK GRU-AUH is barely $200 (EY is cheaper)

I am actually looking at visiting both Dubai and Abu dhabi. Could I take the chaffeur from AUH to DXB?

I told my wife about this option (and we would accrue miles on TK) but she is dead set on flying F (it is her birthday present, not much I can do)

We flew EK last year A380 J HKG-BKK, and then flew SQ SIN-LAX A345 and although EK was nice, they were light years away from SQ...

Thanks for the help guys

The chauffeur service is offered for both Dubai and Abu Dhabi on EY, however only upon departure and arrival. So you'd have to arrange a transfer from one to the other if you're looking at travelling to both, but that can easily be done by your hotel or a private Car company.

In terms of hotels, Etihad's stopover travel agency offers great rates at Abu Dhabi hotels When booked in conjunction with flights and also help out with organising trips and activities whilst there so it's definitely worth a look. Just looking at their rates page they offer a rate at the Ritz Carlton for $270 USD per night.

Just got a mail from my credit card and I have a "companion ticket" benefit so purchasing JFK-DXB RT with them is $18.000 in F for two, that's a no-brainer in my book. I'll see if I can get EY to IST in F or J though. I still want to try them out.

I really appreciate all the help and advice! Thank you!! I'll "pay" with an awesome TR
