Emirates Restricting Stopovers In Dubai?

Wed May 01, 2013 6:03 pm

So I was planning a business trip to FRA with a stop in DXB en route to meet a few friends in Dubai. To my surprise, the website would not allow me to book such an itinerary.

I called up EK to find out what the issue is and was informed that I cannot take  a stop in DXB on the onward journey and can do so on the return journey only ..

Why is that? What logic can be behind this? Pretty disappointing I must say.

Revenue protection.

Common industry practise where a higher fare may apply on the intermediate point to point sector

You should be able to have a stop-over if you book a higher fare level. Not all the cheapest fares allow stopovers.

You can easily book an itinerary with a stop at DXB outbound if you click "Multiple destinations" before selecting your flights. Then select DEL-DXB, DXB-FRA and FRA-DEL.

Fares are not the same if you select flight through "Multiple Destinations"   each leg will be considered apart whereas when booking a connecting flight then fares are most of the times lower.

Right: Some fares do not allow stopovers are all, or only against a fee. This is perfectly normal and common with most airlines in this world...

Some times the difference, if any, will be minor. For example a flight in Y from PER to HAM with a stopover in DXB outbound just resulted in a fare of AUD 2,934.48. A fare without a stopover, departing and returning on the same dates resulted in a fare of AUD 2,917.78. If each sector were treated separately the final price would be much higher and the actual dates of travel may affect the final price.

Unlike most airlines in the world Emirates, DXB and Dubai have the same sugar daddy and considering how broke Dubai is one would think that they will try to encourage as many people as possible to visit Dubai... aka the most overrated shopping mall in the middle of the desert.

may be, but may also be that other Emirates guests do not see that this way and would be willing to pay 50 EUR stopover fee or so to make the stopover to visit those malls, so if EK can make money on that, why not. I believe EK is smart enough to know what they're doing
