AF Or Air China To PEK?

Fri May 03, 2013 12:00 pm

H, I have to fly to PEK for my work in winter, and I have the choice between AF and CA. I know that both operate the 77W.

I wanted to try CA, but a friend of mine flew with them a few years ago and told me that some F/As didn't speak English. I was a bit surprised...

Which airline would you choose?

BTW, as this trip will take place in December/January, is there a big chance for a snowstorm in PEK?

Regards

I have flown Air China to PEK . I also flew them again 5th Freedom CDG-ATH. Three flights with them were all good. Nothing I could complain about.

I went to Beijing in December time and it was very cold and everything covered in snow and ice so be prepared.

I would choose CA. You don't say what what class of service you will be travelling, but CA's 77Ws are better than AF's in both J and Y class. CA 77Ws are 2-2-2 in J and 3-3-3 in Y. AF 77Ws are 2-3-2 in J and 3-4-3 in Y, one more seat across in both classes, and even in J class there's a risk of winding up in a middle seat. CA's lower-density seating would be much better.

Being a regualr on CA's International flights, they crew does speak English. Maybe not too well but they understand you. If CA is flying their new 77W into CDG, I would definitely take that flight. AVOD in all classes and a plug between the seats to charge your devices.

Very cold in Beijing during that period. It only snowed maybe three times last winter.

I have recently flown Air China's 777-300ERs twice, PEK-LAX (May 2012) and PEK-JFK (two weeks ago) and both times had a very positive experience. Tasty food in decent portions, reasonably friendly and immaculately groomed cabin crew, good IFE, very comfortable seat in which I was able to rack up hours of sleep.

Air France on the other hand, 10 abreast on the 777 so very cramped (and no seat pitch either, it's really like a slave ship), shockingly rude cabin crew and less generous with food - you'll get one decent meal and a cold snack, whereas I think Air China's second service is more like a second meal.

Also you never hear of Air China doing stuff like this, whereas Air France can't help themselves. It seems incredibly that safety should be a factor when it comes to evaluating a first world airline in the year 2013, but with Air France, how you value your life and limb has to be a factor.

I flew CA on SHA-PEK last summer. The crew wasn't what you call very "warm" but they spoke English and were quite polite. (Although a bit robotic). The legroom was sufficient and the catering quite decent. I'd give them a try, at least its a nice change from the usual European stuff!

Thanks - but I should have noted your flag, sorry for being so negative about your national airline! I just haven't had very good flights with them, and the 9- versus 10-abreast seating on the 777 does make a difference. I hope you have a good flight with whichever airline you end up on (and no more AF447s for Air France).

I am not a fan of AF, athough I can't say I hate AF.
Their 3-4-3 config on their 777s with no compensation in legroom does upset me: I am a fan of the 777, but AF makes them look bad.
It is right they have had various accidents (they have managed to crash every tye of Airbuses, except the A380).

Correction LY777, Air France has never crashed either the A300, A310, A318, A319 or A321.... in addition to the A380...
The statement that AF has crashed every Airbus type is an A-Net legend...

A318/A319/A321 belong to the A32X family.
For the A300/A310 family, you are right though

nothing wrong with the Chinese carriers and the crews are all competent in English if working overseas flights...I use them quite often, that is China Eastern, China Southern, Air China, Shanghai Air & have never had a problem. In relation to safety it's fair to say that pilots in China are considered to be gods so you're in good hands.

Neither. I would rather connect at some nice airport (CPH, HEL, ZRH) and taker eg. AY, SK or LX than to endure those cramped 777s, not to mention dubious safety record/culture of both airlines.

Why do you consider CA 777s cramped when they're 2-2-2 in J and 3-3-3 in Y, compared to 2-3-2 in J and 3-4-3 in Y on AF? And any connecting routing adds a few hours to the elapsed time. For many passengers time means money. Also more opportunties for delays and checked bags going astray. That's why nonstop fares are usually higher than connections.

Air China 777s are very comfortable 3-3-3 with good IFE. It ain't BA Club World lie flat but as far as Y class travel goes, this is luxury travel. And sorry but

has no basis in reality when it comes to Chinese airlines except a chauvinistic superiority that is unfounded - Chinese airlines don't bend aeroplanes. They've never really been a source of concern (unlike KE, AF, CI) and their contemporary record is spotless.

I am not a fan of connections. There is a high risk of delays, in particular in winter: winter storms are not uncommun in CPH, HEL, ZRH, FRA...
