SAA Connecting Flight Question

Fri May 03, 2013 6:25 pm

Hi all,

My mother will be visiting myself and my wife later this month in Cape Town from London. She will be flying LHR -> JNB -> CPT with SAA.

My question is this: would she be able to check her bags in at LHR all the way to CPT without having to claim them again in JNB and check in again for CPT? A friend of mine told me that because JNB will be the first port of entry into South Africa, she will have to claim her bags there first, and check them in again for the onward flight to CPT.

I was under the impression that she would not need to check her bags in again as all of the flights are on 1 itinerary on the same airline.

As usual, your insights will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks and regards

She will have to clear customs and immigration in JNB which requires her to claim her luggage. She will then have to recheck her luggage for the domestic flight to CPT.

Thanks very much Tony! That does make sense - I didn't think about the customs part...obviously she would need her luggage for that step!

I appreciate your help with this!
