US Pre-Clearance At YYZ?

Sat May 04, 2013 7:10 pm

This summer, I will return to the USA on AC.

I will arrive from FRA, and connect to CLT on Jazz. After I disembark, will I clear US customs in YYZ, or do I have to clear Canadian customs? Also, after pre-clearance, do I have to exit the terminal, or can I go directly to the gate?

Thanks,

Rahul

You no longer have to clear Canadian customs when connecting from an international flight to a U.S. transborder flight at YYZ. You go directly to U.S. pre-clearance. You also no longer have to pick up your checked bags. Toronto T1 recently streamlined these procedures to match the process implemented a year or more ago at YUL and YVR.

Recent AC video explains the process. The International to U.S. section starts at about the 1:40 mark.

I flew YYZ-DTW-PDX on Delta on Friday. Didn't check any bags, but as Viscount said, just went right to Pre-Clearance and then had a domestic connection in Detroit.

Worked great. Not sure if a transit will be treated similarly, but ex/YYZ it's slick.

How does it work the other way round? I am arriving from IAD on UA and will connect to FRA. (LH) on same ticket. Do I have to clear any custom facilities in YYZ? I have checked this on the YYZ homepage but I am a bit confused after reading this.
Fall 2016: ZRH-TLV-ZRH on A3 or LX in Y, ZRH-LCY-ZRH on LX in Y
Spring 2017: ZRH-LCY-ZRH-SFO-LAS-LAX-ZRH on LX in Y,C and F

You technically clear immigration in Toronto. You don't have to pass through the full customs procedure, and you won't have to claim checked bags or go through security again. You will however have to fill out the Canadian Customs form and speak to a Customs agent before passing through to the International departures area.

thanks for this. I assume that a connecting time of 2h should be enough to catch my flight back to Europe. Have a good day,
