United #935 Diverted To IAD On 3 May

I was just looking at today's status for UA 935 and noticed that on the 3rd of May it left LHR 5 hours late and diverted to IAD. It didn't, technically, divert though. It seems to have left LHR directly for IAD instead of flying to LAX. Does anyone know why that is?

Why would a carrier have a planned crew change on a flight that is to fly non stop to LAX ? If they wanted to stop 1/2 way passengers wouldnt book non stops.

With the delay, maybe the crew would go illegal, so they divert to IAD, and picked a fresh crew for the flight.

With delay out of LHR, choice is either 1) cancel flight entirely, 2) operate somewhere else and plan on a crew change.

UA does this type of adjustments regularly in effort to protect a flight from total cancellation.

In such a situation, do pax go through CBP in IAD or do they just land, change crews and carry on to LAX as an international flight?

If pax do get off the plane, can those whose final destination is not LAX ask to be rebooked to flights to their destinations from IAD without going all the way to LAX?

I may be wrong but I thought all flights now had to clear formalities at the first point of arrival in the U.S. I suppose there could be exceptions in the event of an emergency landing etc. at an airport without any customs/immigration facilities.

On that specific day, passengers cleared FIS in IAD as the outbound reserve crew was not planned for a quick turn.
In the past however at times its been a tech stop only - no different than landing in Bangor, or some other remote airport. Pax remained on board and cleared customs at LAX. It varies from event to event.

My other half was on that flight. There was a hydraulic leak which delayed take off by around 4 hours. Just before push back, they advised that crew would be out of hours and they would fly a crew to IAD from ORD and change crew there. They were on ground for 40 mins or so. Total delay to arrival in LAX was about 6 hours.

No passengers were allowed to leave the aircraft in IAD. Passengers were kept on board and arrived in to LAX where they cleared customs and immigration. They parked at T7 but were transferred to Tom Bradley as I presume T7 facilities were unavailable at that time.

I am amazed how tight they were with crew time that they had to deadhead a crew from ORD because they couldn't make it to ORD since it is only about 45 minutes further.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Check crew legality rules.

You sure it was that flight, and not one a bit earlier.

The May 3rd flight spend almost exactly 2-hours on the ground at IAD.

Not sure what you mean. There is no earlier nonstop LHR/LAX flight with United. They're once a day.

Through his jet-lag induced haze, he said it felt very quick and was about 40 minutes. However, from the screenprint I've kept from the United website it says:

Departed LHR 2.53pm
Arrived IAD 5.01pm
Departed IAD 6.28pm
Arrived LAX 8.43pm

That happened to me in late Feb.
originally FRA-ATL on DL, but due to long tech delay it was FRA-JFK (crew change) - ATL.

I think it's cheaper to have both crew and A/C "at home" than cancelling the flight completely and having the equipment sit on a foreign airport and crew in a hotel for one more night. Then, the next day, you'd have two DL A/C sitting in FRA (in my case) because surely DL would have operated the ATL-FRA leg that night. Big hiccup.
Why is 10 afraid of 7? Because 7 8 9.

That I don't know about. However, he was definitely on UA935 on 3rd May which did have the unscheduled stop in IAD for about 90 minutes as described above.
