Airlines You Missed Your Chance To Fly On

Thu May 23, 2013 6:52 pm

I guess the title is more or less self explanatory, but to repeat, which airlines did you have the opportunity to fly on but didn't, and now can't because that airline no longer exists either through liquidation or merger? I know there are probably hundreds of airlines around the world that have gone out of business over the years, so in the interest of brevity please limit your lists to airlines that would have been a reasonable option for your travels. No airlines that only operated in distant parts of the world that you've never been to, and no airlines that went under before you were old enough to buy your own tickets (unless you're not yet old enough, then no airlines that went under before you were born).

TWA -- I consider this one a bit of a grey area as far as my rules go, because I'm not sure if they were a reasonable option for me or not. Technically I turned 18 a few years before they merged with AA, so theoretically I could have bought a ticket on them if I really wanted to, but I didn't actually take my first flight until 2003, so TWA was never an airline I actually considered for any trips. I lived in Raleigh at the time, and I'm also not even sure if they served RDU at the time so I don't know if they even would have been an option.

Midway (the one based at RDU) -- Again, they went under before I actually took my first flight, but I did live in Raleigh during their heyday so if I had wanted to fly somewhere they probably would have been my first choice since they were the hometown airline, a lot of my friends used them, and supposedly they had good fares. Had they been around when I did take that first flight they would have been the first airline I would have considered.

Independence Air -- I would probably have considered them, but they didn't last all that long and they went under before I had a reason to travel to anywhere they flew to.

America West -- When I first moved to the Sacramento area in 2005, just out of curiosity I look into what sort of flights/fares they were offering back to North Carolina, and it looked like they would have been a good option. But then when I did fly back there other airlines offered better deals, or better times or something, so I never actually flew HP before they went away and became part of US Airways.

Aloha -- I came this close to booking their SMF-OGG flight once, but I found a really good deal on a United flight and booked that instead. Now I'll never have another chance to fly them.

ATA -- They never were that good of an option for me as they didn't fly to SMF, but I did look into flying out of OAK for that Hawaii trip. They were a bit cheaper than flying out of SMF, but not enough to make the drive worth it.

Skybus -- Again they never were the best option since they never flew to SMF, but I thought about maybe driving to OAK if the price was right just to see what they were like. But they didn't last long enough for me to ever try them.

AirTran -- Not technically gone yet, but won't be around for much longer. As with the previous two I never flew them because they didn't serve SMF, but I guess if I really wanted to I could have driven to SFO.

US Airways (probably) -- Still around but if the merger with AA goes through I don't think it's likely I'll have any reason to fly them before the brand goes away. For a lot of trips they were an option for be, but they just never were the best option for various reasons.

There are very few airlines I regret not flying though I wanted to and could have done at the time:

British Caledonian - that´s the one I kick myself for over and over again for not taking the chance when I had it !
I went many times to BRU for spotting (or even flying on KL/SN/etc.) I lived in Germany near the Belgian border then ...
Never made it on BRU-LGW with their BAC 1-11 despite the fares were not too high ...

Birmingham Executive
They served BHX-DUS at the time and I found their Gulfstream G-159 (G I) extraordinarily - even at the time ...
But fares were pretty steep so I never made it - unfortunately.

OLT
With their routes always a bit off the beaten track I did not manage to make it happen.
I miss the sound of rolls royce darts and speys

America West

I was lucky to fly them and they were a great airline. I flew BUR-PHX in F Class. So glad I did .

I share that view. So many times I wanted to but failed to . Another one is Dan Air from LHR-INV was so close to booking it but didnt.

Yeah, Aloha is the one I really regret not flying when I had the chance, but America West is definately second.

Pan American (Pan Am).
In the Summer of 1991 I was travelling roundtrip from DFW to Washington DC. For something different my choices were United with connection at ORD (flying aboard a 747-400 between ORD and IAD) or Pan Am with connection at JFK in one direction and MIA the other direction. As I recall, the departure time of the Pan Am flight on the return portion of the trip was extremely early and not convenient for my family to get to the airport so I chose the United itinerary. Not long after that Pan Am went out of business.
I would have loved to have flown on Pan American (the original)

My biggest regret is the (recently gone) Continental. Had so many opportunities to fly the, both to Florida and other places in the USA but always chose another option. Was even listed on an EWR-IAH flight with them back in 2010 but couldn't get on FI 631 to JFK the day before so had to go via YYZ instead.

Narrowly missed Braathens on KEF-OSL as it migrated into SAS before I could book.

Nothing else really that I've missed, although I would've loved to fly ATA on their MDW-SRQ route. Always loved seeing their 738s in that elegant golden livery soaring over me on their way into SRQ.

Also flying America West would've been great but I never had any motive/opportunity to choose them on my travels.

Regards!

TAB Boliviano 727. Cubana il62. Aeroflot tu154. ATA L1011 BA Concorde. The main thing for me is type but i investigated flying all of these at some point in adulthood but never managed it before my time ran out.

BCal - had the option on Orlando-London but I took AA via MIA (outbound) and JFK (return)

Skybus - option but never found CMH on my destination list
I want to live in an old and converted 727...

BCal for sure - although I did fly on their former 742 G-HUGE LGW-DXB-HKG several months after the merger with BA - still in BCal configuration but with BA seat covers

Varig - I burned some Star Alliance miles for a trip to Roskilde in 2002 which involved SK LHR-CPH MD-80, and the return on RG CPH-LHR on an MD-11 (new type for me, too).

The Varig flight GRU-LHR-CPH was listed as arriving in CPH 3 or 4 hours late after leaving late from Sao Paulo. Eventually it became clear they would cancel the service, and the final wave of departures to UK was already underway with only a GLA, MAN and BHX service remaining to depart - of course I wanted them to send me CPH-GLA then GLA-LHR on BD for 2 sectors, but the connection in GLA was only 15mins and they wouldn't sell it.

Ended up getting on CPH-BHX SK MD-90 (nice surprise, but not exactly the MD-11 I had hoped for) and then having to retrieve the bag I had left at LHR T3 left luggage the next day

I'm not certain that I ever "had a chance" to fly on the airlines I've missed; due to youth or impecuniousness. But the brands that I've seen disappear in my lifetime include Pan Am, Piedmont, (for abecedarian reasons it feels like I should here include PeoplExpress, only I've absolutely no regrets about never having taken them), Aruba, BWIA, SwissAir, and I suppose Sabena. Not sure if I have any actual icky feelings about having missed Sabena, or BWIA for that matter; just that my interest in the latter was piqued when I saw one of their planes on the tarmac at Toronto Pearson. I genuinely regret not having been aboard the others in my list.

Airlines I'm proud to have been aboard before they vanished would include TWA, Mexicana, America West, Continental, and American Trans Air.

I've been aboard National (N7, not NA); and frankly I'm not sure of the extent to which I'm proud of that.

I've also been aboard Eastern. Have zero pride about that. Glad when they folded.

Well,
NW, CO, and maybe soon US. I always flew DL out of PHX.
Also I had the opportunity to fly Canada 3000 once when my family was planning a trip to Canada and from Canada to Florida but those plans were scrapped before they happened. Also my uncle often flew ATA from IND but I never had that chance. I also could've flown FL from PHX to ATL to meet my family in South Carolina, but again, missed that chance and I won't be back in the states before the FL brand is near gone.

Always heard good things about Reno Air, never got that chance. Had one trip on TWA and thought they were quite classy, sad I never got to try them again. Saw an old Aloha 732 in HNL and wanted to take a ride on one but never got back to Hawaii before they were gone. And last but not least...took ATA on MDW-GDL-MDW for $300 all-in, was in tequila country before I knew it and made it to the beach by that evening. I definitely wanted to take that flight again, but they went belly-up a week after.

I wish I had been able to fly on

-- Hughes Airwest (gone before I had the finances to fly them)
-- Florida Express (BAC111 - I was planning to fly on them when they went out)
-- Ozark Airlines (moved to St Louis after they had already merged into TWA)

I have flown on the following airlines that are no longer in existence (or soon to be gone): AirTran (FL) , Aloha Airlines (AQ) , America West Airlines (HP) , ATA (TZ) , British Midland (BD), Continental Airlines (CO), Eastern Airlines (EA), Midwest Airlines (YX), Muse Air (MC), National Airlines (NA), Northwest Airlines (NW), PSA (PS), Pacific Western (PW), People Express (PE), Presidential Airways (XV), Reno Air (QQ), TWA (TW), USA 3000 (U5), Western Airlines (WA)

(Plus US Airways (US))

(More than half the airlines I have flown on are no longer around)

Republic (RC)
In March 1982 , my mother and I flew to DEN to visit my sister and her husband. From Boise, we had 3 choices at the time, and I got to make the decision.
United, Frontier, and Republic.
Eliminated UA due to having been on them many times by then.
Between FL and RC, I think I chose FL due to 737 as opposed to DC9 and also had never been on FL.
Ultimately, trip was good on FL (boarding via old gate 5/6 at BOI via airstairs) and have since flown Frontier (FL) BOI-DEN-ABQ in 1986, GEG-BOI in 1985 or 6, and my first 'alone' trip BOI-SLC 1983. Opp to fly RC never came up again, as RC pulled out of BOI April 1983.

Several mentions of BCAL, I flew them twice on a VC-10 which was a double whammy!

I never flew BOAC though....

I think if one sprang immediately to mind it would be Pan Am.

Totally agree, it's one of those things that you just take for granted will always be there and one day you wake up, it's too late.

Also had the change to fly on a United DC8, but we changed our ticket and we flew an AA 727-23 instead, N1972, PDX-ORD in 1986. Never flown a DC8.

Luckily I managed to fly Pan Am 5 times, LHR-SEA, SEA-LHR twice each and my first long haul flight on N729PA (hence my profile ID), LHR-SFO .......lovely airline. We always flew PA to the US, I still miss them.

Also managed to fly on Eastern A300 from SEA-PDX, about a year or so before the end.

Back to the subject matter......

Like most British Caledonian is on there. UTA, TWA, Northwest Orient, Western, PSA, Wardair Canada, CP Air, BWIA are too.

Yes, definitely. In 1980 they flew 747s to Brussels and Frankfurt. My sister worked for Braniff in Boston during their transatlantic flights. Here is a photo of the timetable.
http://timetableimages.com/i-bc/bn8010i.jpg

Little of the expected new business materialized; 747 service from the new Boston hub proceeded particularly poorly, with the huge planes flying nearly empty.

Most notable on my list is Comair. Now, you may wonder why was a regional airline with a fleet comprised entirely of CRJs so appealing to me? Well, I worked a lot of Comair flights when I first started at Delta in ATW and I could've flown them for free and still missed my chance. That one really stings.

Another one was ATA. They briefly flew to GRB (via their Connection partner Chicago Express), but I don't think my parents ever considered them when booking flights. I loved their palm tree tails and had an ATA L-1011 model growing up. I always hoped I could fly with them, but they went out of business before I could afford my own tickets.

I also really liked Continental growing up, mostly because they were a partner of my favorite airline, Northwest. I almost bought a ticket with them a few years back, but Delta was much cheeper and I booked with them instead. I regret that one.

There are other airlines that have come-and-gone that I would have loved to try, but these are the ones that stick out in my mind. I didn't include carriers like Eastern and Pan Am, since they went out of business when I was very young, or carriers like Swissair or Sabena, which I never had an opportunity to fly on.

I'm sure glad I didn't miss out on these, though...
-- America West Airlines (HP)
-- Mesaba Airlines/Northwest Airlink (XJ)
-- Midwest Express Airlines (YX)
-- Northwest Airlines (NW)
-- Skyway Airlines/The Midwest Express Connection (AL)
-- US Airways (US) (Probably soon to be gone.)
Flown on 9E/AA/AL/CP/DL/EV/HP/MQ/NW/PT/OO/OH/UA/US/XJ/YV/YX/ZW

Pan Am 707.

I had the opportunity to fly a Pan Am 707 from JFK - LIS in 1972 as part of a college tour, but I opted instead for the charter carrier, Overseas National Airlines (DC-8-63), because it was a bit cheaper. I'm glad I had the opportunity ride the DC-8-63, although that wasn't the first or last time. But I never flew Pan Am, and I never flew on a 707. Big regret.

I foolishly missed a few:

BA Concorde : I was working for an airline at the time and could have got a discounted seat. Just didn't react in time.

TWA: I flew on Pan Am instead.

Laker Skytrain: I was due to go to JFK with parents but decided to go on holiday with friends to Greece.

If only I had known
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I didn't think I'd see any mention of the airlines I wished I'd flown on when I had the chance.

1) Marco Island Airlines - last chance to fly a Martin 404. My Dad worked in the Martin factory in the 1940's.
2) Reeve Aleutian
3) Lake Central (showing my age)
4) Northeast (ditto)
5) Mohawk

Not a complete miss because I had flown with them previously. Quite a few years ago now, Ansett Australia were meant to carry me to Queensland but went into liquidation before hand. Lucky for me I got my money back but not everybody did.

I had wanted to fly from Hamburg on Cimber and they also folded, but Scandinavian later stepped in. All the same my flights were not quite the same.

An airline that is still in business but changed its schedule after I booked: Finnair. I wanted to fly HKG-HEL but they cancelled flights on the day that I wanted to fly. Suggested alternatives did not suit so they missed out. All the same, I compliment them for the speed with which they processed the refund.

I was planning a trip once and had decided to fly Independence Air, but I ended up having to cancel the trip and Independence ceased operations not long after.

I never got the chance to fly either TWA or Pan Am. I do regret missing those.

Never made it on Northwest, but since most of my travel is on Delta these days that sort of counts.

I once took that flight, actually one or 2 of the weekly flights went BOS-BRU-FRA.

I could rather write a list of carriers I flew on and that no longer exist.,

Presidential was one, YMX to IAD , I asked the FA why they hadn't named the carrier "Reagan Air", He was quick in his reply "That gives us another term". Actually, it did not.

East African Airways - always wanted a ride on one of their VC10's, but then they lost one (or was it two) of them & decided not to.

Never flew Court Line, Sabena or British Eagle not that I really regret missing any of them
