Help With Cathay Pacific New Biz Class

Wed May 29, 2013 5:23 am

Hello, everyone!

I have a couple of questions regarding Cathay Pacific's New Business Class:

1. How was your experience with the new CX Biz Class "seats"? Positive???

2. Do you get to keep the noise-canceling headsets?

Thanks!

Hi wedgetail737,

1.) if you are referring to CX's new longaul business class seats (the one they have on the 777-300ERs and most of the longhaul A330: they are in my eyes the BEST business class seats on the market. I was lucky to have been on them to Australia and back and a few trips intra-Asia (where CX puts longhaul- and shortfaul planes, whatever is availlable) and they are great.
They have the perfect mix of privacy (you hardly notice the person sitting next to you), openness and roominess. The quality of the material is also really high and the colourscheme is elegant. The seat provides ample space when sitting AND when sleeping (i sleep on the side and even then you have lots of space for your arms and knees etc). The table is of a great size also, and lots of storage ideas and little practical details have been incorporated into the seat. To top this all off, try to get a seat in one of the smaller cabins on the plane, it is quieter and feels even more private. Enjoy!

By the way, the new regional business class seat of CX is also a huge improvement over the old one, lots of space and no person putting the seat in front of you in your face even in business class...

2.) No, the headsets are not "for keeping", they are also not that great, but they do a good job on the plane in covering noise, i prefer my own B*** ones though.

Cheers!

I am flying biz on CX from HKG to AKL in August. Will the seats be on those A340's by then?

Hi Kiwinoz,

i don't think so. The A340s still have the old longhaul business class seats, they will get a "refresh" in seatcushion fabric and different pillows (and blankets maybe), but not the new seats AFAIK.
HOWEVER, the A340s will get (in the next few weeks) the Premium Economy seats now, which they were not supposed to get in the first place. New Zealand is one of the first destinations which will see the Premium Economy seat on the A340s. I was on the A330 in Premium Economy to Australia and also intra-Asia a few times and they are a fine product, worth the higher price in my view and make the trip much more comfortable. I will be PE to London in July. Try to get the first row in Premium Economy, it has more legroom and a proper legrest.

The A343s aren't getting the new seats. They are getting some new fabrics (and cladding on the sidewalks I think), but the seats are their core will remain the same.

Much better than the old seats on A343 or B744. Too bad they choose not to retrofit it onto the beloved B744.

Flew it today HKG-SFO. Works better with kids than the old version if you sit side by side in the middle pod. Still not as good as SQ A380, but better than KE.

AKL is apparently on hold until the A351 is delivered.. Shows how much they value this route. It's a real shame that they're not bothering to put in the new product (both J and Y) into the 343. I know a few people who have been disappointed with the fact that they get awesome seats on the Europe flights but this abysmal product to AKL. I know I'm annoyed by it..

It is considering they will be around another 5-6 years. I guess AKL, AMS, FCO are lower yeilding than other routes that get the 77Ws and newer A330s.

Yep all about consistancy, or lack of in this case.

Pretty sure the A340s were always getting Premium Economy atleast publicly. Maybe internally they weren't originally planning on it?!

It's quite funny that Friday's flight HKG-AKL was packed.. Odd time for it to be. Never looked like coming close to selling out when I booked it. If only they went for a 3-class 77W on this route...

No originally the A340s were not getting any upgrades at all as they were planning to get rid of them sooner rather then later...wonder what has changed those plans?

All of the Aussie ports (ADL, BNE, CNS, MEL, PER, SYD) get the newer A330s, and the yeild to most of these wouldn't be all that different to AKL, AMS and FCO...probably more the fact that they can't justify the cost of upgrading the A340s seeing as they won't be in the fleet too much longer. Seeing as those flights would be pushing the A330 limits, and a 77W is too much capacitiy for those routes, they will just have to wait till the A350 arrives as a suitable aircraft for the route.

Anyway, back to the original topic:

1) The new J seats are great, lots of personal space, and i love the revers herring layout, much more comfortable. If you are travelling by yourself, the window seats are fantastic and private. If you are travelling with a companion, get the centre seats as they angle in towards each other and you can move your seat forward so you can chat and have dinner/drinks etc.

2) No the head sets are not for keeping...
