Try FlightRadar24 or FlightStats (Flight Event Timeline). These are the best ways to finding registrations immediately after the flight. You can also use FlightAware to confirm the initial finding.

Generally, FlightAware isn't the best for seeking the registration from the flight number as it is not displayed. However, once you have an idea of the tail number, FlightAware will show the list of flights it has flown. You could try entering every AAL 738 but with over 200 airframes, this is probably not the best method.

Thank you for the information. I tried FlightRadar24; it provides the registration number if you search the 'Planes' section in the active list. I couldn't find the registration anywhere else.

As for FlightStats, very nice maps, but again I couldn't find any registration numbers in the flight event timeline. Or anywhere else, for that matter. Am I looking in the wrong place?

cinja, once I log on to www.flightaware.com where do I go from the home page to find tail numbers for specific flights?

There is no easy way on FlightAware to get the tail number from the flight number. For some reason, when you enter the flight number, it gives you plenty of information but not the tail number. This has been a complaint of a few others on the forums.

FlightAware does store the tail number, so if you are in a desperate situation to find it and the other sites are not helpful, you can try entering every aircraft of that type that belongs to the airline. In your case, you flew on an AA 738, so if you went through every AA 738 registration on FlightAware, eventually you would discover the one that flew the route. I've done this a few times before I discovered FlightRadar24, it is kind of satisfying when you finally find the correct flight, even if it takes 30 minutes or more.
