Update Of Fare Search Engine: Delta Web Site

Thu Jun 27, 2013 2:46 pm

Does anyone know if Delta plans to update their fare search engine anytime soon? Reason: I'm planning a trip to Germany in the autumn, and delta.dumb gives me fares that are some $100 bucks higher than sites like hotwire and priceline...for the exact same itinerary which is entirely on Delta and SkyTeam codeshare airlines. I'd like to use the Delta site so I can use pay with miles...frustrating!

Update Of Fare Search Engine: Delta Web Site

Fri Jun 28, 2013 4:25 am

I had the same problem myself when booking flights to Europe with Delta recently.

I found that only when I checked "My dates are flexible", I was given the lowest fares (which matched what I saw on Kayak, Priceline, etc.). It was certainly irritating because even if I searched the exact same dates as the low-fares dates found previously WITHOUT checking the flexible dates box, the search results showed more expensive fares.

I'm not sure if this is just a bug in Delta's site or if this is done on purpose. If it is on purpose, it's a classic case of price discrimination: those who are prepared to pay more will pay more.

EDIT: I tried to replicate this issue on the Delta site just now and couldn't seem to do it. Maybe the itinerary I was booking just had something particular about it. In any case, price discrimination is an interesting topic, and it's not necessarily something negative (despite the connotations of the word "discrimination"). I always found it interesting how airlines found ways to ensure every passenger pays the most he/she is willing to pay.

Update Of Fare Search Engine: Delta Web Site

I think you are confused here, Delta's "updating their fare search engine" as you suggest, will not change a thing. What you experience here is different prices for the same product through different channels, which is perfectly normal. Sometimes you'll find the same price on the airline's web site and on the resellers, but in most cases (international in particular), you'll get different or VERY different results. And this has nothing to do with Delta not "updating their fare search engine". They simply ask for a higher price if you book through them directly instead of Orbitz. No need to call Delta's web site "delta.dumb". Delta's web site is not dumber than you are.

It's like a can of Coca-Cola that costs more at the gas station than at WAL-MART, and you ask the gas station to re-decorate their store. Your request makes no sense at all.

I'm not confused at all! Maybe I didn't explain myself well, but I'm certainly not confused. I've noticed on a number of occasions that the Delta web site does not always give me the same Delta or SkyTeam codeshare flight options that web sites like Priceline or Cheap Fare Guru do. When that happens, the Delta web site tends to only show the higher priced flight options. So, in my estimation the Delta fare search engine is inferior (dumber!) than those other engines I just mentioned! Or, Delta is sly as a fox and trying to gouge me!

Thanks for the tip! I did what you suggested and got more flight/fare options to show up on the Delta web site. I'll have to remember this "trick" for future travel!
