Flight Crew 'Entertainment'

Thu Jun 27, 2013 4:17 pm

Flying ARN-LHR a couple of days back, on approach after the usual announcements were out the way, one of the FAs started some weird rant about what the weather might be like, and how 'what will be, will be' before then breaking into a rull-on rendition of 'Que Sera' sang over the PA system. I suppose it was quite pleasant, but a little strange to be honest. I felt mildly embarrassed for her, as she went on and on, but nobody joined in. We of course all gave her a polite round of applause at the end though.

So, a couple of questions:

What are your experiences of flight crews performing such ad hoc 'entertainment'? I know there are lots of videos about of various things, raps, songs or whatever. What do you make of this? Do you really want this at the end of a long day when you long simply for peace and quiet? Do you think it's unprofessional at all? Is it encouraged or discouraged in any way by particular companies?

I was pretty neutral towards it really. It did have one benefit in that it drowned out the noise of a particularly badly-behaved brat who had irritated the hell out of half the cabin with its unruly behaviour, and whose mother did literally nothing to get it to sit down and shut up.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't care enough to make a big deal out of it, but I'd prefer it not happen, especially if there were something going on on the IFE that I was paying attention to. I generally like inflight announcements to be kept short and to the point.

I didn't - I just sat there and applauded politely at the end. I'm just interested because it's the first time I've seen this personally.

This kind of thing used to happen a lot on WN but it is less common now. At first I didn't like it, but now I I think it's ok once in a while.

Is it actively encouraged by management though?

Maybe she was doing some self-confidence building exercise, givenh ow they are in vogue everywhere nowadays it seems.

I had an FA do the safety demo on a CO flight IAH-MEX while dancing to "La Macarena". It was funny.
