Help With Old Tail Numbers?

Mon Jul 01, 2013 5:40 am

I've flown more in the last 12 months than I did in my entire 24 years of life before it...of course working for an airline helps.

I never started to take down tail numbers until last summer, as I child I never cared about that detail. Now I do, and I love that I have the majority of the birds I've flown on my adult life recorded.

But, I'm missing a few, and I'm wondering if I can get some help retrieving them...and a way I can retrieve them in the future if I forget to catch a ship. I don't know how far back it's possible to go, and to be honest, I really care most about the ones from 05/12 onwards, but if it is possible to get the ones before that, I'd love to.

So here goes, ANY help is appreciated...

Go to the website linked below and click the links under Detailed Statistics for either "Departures" or "Arrivals" searches. You can see all departures/arrivals from any given airport for any given date since 1995 for most carriers (including the larger regionals), and the data includes tail numbers. It's easiest to search from a non-hub airport (e.g., for your DTW-PWM flight, searching Arrivals data at PWM, rather than Departures data from DTW), as that returns fewer results to sift through.

Odd. There seems to be some sort of problem with the link. Suggest copying/pasting the link below.

Thank you sooooooo much! It may also help me fill in my old flight numbers/equipment from the late 90's/early 00's when I didn't care what type of aircraft I was on, or what flight number.

Is there any way to track International flights? I have plenty of those that I'd like to get tail numbers for, but I can't seem to find a website with any information.

You can try searching flight numbers (format XX####, where XX is the Airline Code) for specific dates/routes on ACARSD.org. They usually are pretty good about catching international flights that originate or terminate in either N. America or Europe.

Also, at the height of my Aerogeekery, to obtain flight numbers/aircraft types for flights I took pre-1995 (thankfully not too many, and almost all international, so I could match flights to passport stamps in my expired passports) for my FlightMemory, I took a weekend trip to Seattle and spent part of an afternoon at the Seattle Public Library. That library has an extensive collection of OAGs going back decades. You won't get tail numbers, but all the equipment type and flight-number info is there.

You can have a look at libhomeradar.org . They are pretty good, but unfortunately you can't go very far in the past...

Just another question. Is there any other way to find tail numbers from airlines not under the BTS site? Republic Airlines and GoJet Airlines in particular aren't there.
