Vietnam Domestic Flights

Fri Aug 16, 2013 1:27 am

I'm trying to plan a short trip to Vietnam in October. How does the on time/cancellation performance compare between Vietnam Airlines, VietJet and Jetstar Pacific compare?

Specifically, I'm looking at the Saigon to Hue and Danang routes. Hue airport is closed for maintenance until 19 September. Any issues with early October? It's loaded back in with Vietnam Airlines and VietJet, but not with Jetstar.

My preference is to fly Jetstar due to voucher credit. I need to fly from either Kuala Lumpur or Singapore to Vietnam, but unfortunately only the prohibitively expensive SilkAir flies to Danang. I can't seem to get through tickets to Danang or Hue without out of the way routings (eg China) which are too expensive. Looking at the timetables it's possible to do something fly with AirAsia from KUL to SGN, then have a layover (say between 4 - 12 hours!) before flying onwards to Hue with VN. Does this sound sensible? Our time is very limited.

Edit: Any advice about trustworthy tour organisers for the Hue - Hoi An section would be welcome. Prefer to organise it in Australia.

I can't speak from experience, but I recently read a blog about travelling on a budget with children:
www.summerholidayofalifetime.com
He travelled to and within Vietnam, might be worth a read.

I spent a couple of years working in Viet Nam and that afforded me the opportunity of flying domestically with VN 75 times. Never had a cancelation and delays were only due to weather. All short flights. HAN-HUI is 55 minutes and SGN-HUI is a little over an hour. Enjoy VN.

I flew Vietnam Airlines round trip SGN-HAN last year and the flights went well, on-time, and the airline seemed very well organized and helpful. Full planes too. These were on 777 and 330 aircraft for the short domestic hops.
I love dem planes....

I think you mean www.thesummerholidayofalifetime.com . Will have a read.

So it looks like VN are good. What about the VietJet and Jetstar Pacific?

I would suggest that you stick with VNA, safer choice of being on time.

Vietjet: new airlines, not enough aircraft so often delay
jetstar pacific: old aircraft, not good service
