What US Airports Are In Need Of An Overhaul

Sat Aug 24, 2013 5:49 am

I know MIA has built terminals J & D which are both
beautiful. Aside from that terminals E, F & G either needs to
get demolished and rebuilt from the curb side to the gates
or get a complete face lift.

What other US airports are in the same shape that either need a face lift
or complete overhaul and why?

Too many to list really.

Most have their good and bad parts.

A year or so ago I was in RDU. I arrived a sparkling nice new termnal with DL, and departed at a completely outdated place with WN. This place was grey, black, seemed mostly unused (there were gate areas where they removed everyhting, includiing seating benches since no one would use them), and the boarding gates were actually regular doors that a gate agent had to open, with an old manual little sign where they would slip in little pieces of plastic with destination name, flight number and departure time...

Orlando - Sanford (SFB)

I know FI is the only non-LCC/charter company flying there, but still. Very very outdated IMO.

Can't think of any others at the moment except maybe some parts of ORD.

Good christ, itsn't that so! It's a disaster, and the customs hall is dreadful!

And then, once you are past the passport control, you enter the most disorganised baggage reclaim in the developed world. And there is always one poor CS agent (always a woman) sitting at the UA service desk.

Once you have found your bags, you then enter what I am fairly certain is a circle of hell so awful that Dante had to leave it out. The CD Customs Security checkpoint.

Low ceilings?
Masses of people?
Angry TSA Staff?
Poor Lighting?
Sloooooow?

They should burn that terminal to the ground and then call a squadron of priests to exorcise the demons that would no doubt linger.

IAD is actually my preferred entry point to the USA when I am flying UA. Is it aesthetically beautiful? No! Functionally it is great...the only UA hub where I can realistically make a 80 minute intl-dom connection thanks to the C/D FIS. I have not had any of the other issues you are speaking of.

That said, IAD is far from perfect. It is ridiculous that UA's hub has been in a "temporary" terminal for 30+ years. IAD is the only airport I can think of where the hub carrier has the worst facilities in the airport.

How have you ever made an 80 minute connection in C/D? I am lucky to make it through Customs and Security in 90 minutes, let alone make it to a gate. And that's when I'm one of the first through the passport control. It's the TSA checkpoint that always slows me down.

PHL needs a major facelift, not a 21 century airport by any means.

All of them really. I was just in SYD and saw the whole concept of an international transit hall. The US really needs to adopt this system.

Also, flying through both LAX and SFO on my trip, both international and domestic sides, I realized that both are extremely outdated and are pathetic excuses to be US gateways. IMO.

Terminal 1 at SAN needs some work (at least the WN rotunda). Every time I go through there is hardly room to move around, it is so crowded.

I would say it is more terminals than airports in many cases.

Like IAH. Terminal E is great Terminal B north is horrid, but getting fixed eventually.
Terminal D at IAH needs to be cleaned up next.

Some of LAX, some MIA, etc.

Many terminals at some of the bigger airports need refurbs.

That quote is a keeper. I fly thru IAD frequently but I'm a Global Entry participant and normally don't have any checked luggage. It has never taken me more than 20 minutes to get from the airplane to the United Club. I've actually caught a connecting flight that left 45 minutes after we touched down from DXB.

I've seen the lines at immigration but United reps have told me that since it's just a few flights that arrive at 6-7 AM, Immigration doesn't staff each position. I can imagine it's a nightmare during the afternoon pushes.

United's terminal is definitely not one of the nicer ones in the system but it's relatively easy for connections as almost every flight leave from the same building (C and D).

Get an airline club membership and pair of blinders and you'll be OK at IAD.

Up until recently, you could say that Concourse D at ATL was, as for years the midpoint of the concourse was cramped and crowded (Even worse than the rest of the concourse.). They're finishing up an expansion and renovation that added some new retail and dining outlets, redid the escalator access to the concourse.

That's it exactly. Since I am always on the VIE flight, sometimes we are insanely lucky and arrive as one of the first European arrivals...and then sometimes we arrive right at the high point of the afternoon rush, and can't even make it into the immigration hall because it is so full.

The terminal you flew out of with WN was the former Terminal A, renamed Terminal 1 when the new terminal opened. The new terminal (Terminal 2) opened a few years ago to replace the former Terminal C, which was built in the 1980s for the AA hub. The last I heard long term plan is to renovate Terminal 1 and essentially make it the LCC terminal. It was originally going to house WN, FL, and B6, but then B6 decided to move to the new terminal and FL is of course going away soon. In the short term, if I remember correctly, the plan was to renovate the former DL gates in the middle of the terminal, move WN there, then demolish the part of the terminal WN had been using. Is sounds like you flew out of there before WN moved to their renovated gates and after the other airlines vacated the terminal.
