Iran Air, September 2014: 747SP Likely Or Not?

Sat Oct 19, 2013 10:34 pm

I know this is a hard to answer question and I don't expect a definite answer, just a general idea about what my odds are. I'm planning to fly from Beijing to Europe in September 2014 (still a long time to go) and I'm considering going through Tehran on Iran Air to catch a flight on the 747SP. What are the odds that they'll still be doing that route in late 2014? I'd be fine with an equipment change for a 741 or 742, but would hate to find myself on an A340 or something. Do they swap equipment a lot on that route? Would it be a safer bet to book KUL-THR instead?

Thanks for your help!

I think it's fair to say in truth you won't know until the day comes. My dad when he was alive used to work for Iran Air at LHR, and we could have got free travel as far as Tokyo (late 80s/early 90s), but my Mum didn't fancy the stop over in THR so we never did it unfortunately - there was also a matter of a war with Iraq too for most of that time so I can't blame her.

The Iran Air website is still showing the SP until 26th March (as far as the schedule goes at the moment). Kuala Lumpur is also showing the same too.

In reality your flight could very easily be replaced with a 741 or 742 too, or anything else they get between now and Sept 14.

Tricky one to call. Unless you can go out via Beijing and return via Kuala Lumpur and get a MH/CA (or someone else) ticket in between BJS and KUL.

In the "old" days the SP used to operate LHR-PAR-THR or LHR-ROM-THR ....what I'd give to be able to do that now. Sadly no more.

I wish you luck, it would be an experience I think what ever you find yourself on.

I can't answer for Beijing but working with our system for arrival & departure times at Kuala Lumpur for some time now i can say the SP seems to be a steady visitor. I still tend to notice them as i've had my first up close encounter with a still in revenue service SP in KUL

Of course with the embargo being what it is any kind of technical problem could still throw a serious spanner in the works. But hey, that's all part of what makes it exciting, right  ?

Stranded in Tehran for a couple of days... I'm not so sure. Lovely people, many of them, but a bit tricky getting by with no access to your finances.
