8 Hours Stopover At SIN With 7-year Old Son

Tue Jan 14, 2014 6:32 am

Hi guys,

have been busy booking my annual trip to good old Germany and will this time take my 7-year old son along. Used some of my frequent flyer points so the little fellow gets to fly long haul business class for the first time.

We will be flying as follows:

QF 51 / BNE-SIN / June 20 / 10:20 - 16:05
AY 82 / SIN-HEL / June 20 / 23:35 - 06:35 +1

Give me some ideas what we can do at SIN for the nearly 8 hours in transit. As a QF Platinum intend to ensure we have dinner before our flight and take him for a swim in T1.

Any other recommendations ? Was thinking of going to the Singapore Flyer. Is it worth it or overrated ? Open for any suggestions to make this a great experience for him and to make him tired to ensure he sleeps the 12 hours to Helsinki.

Cheers from Brisbane,

Peter

Check out the Singapore Night Zoo. It's a totally unique experience because you get to see nocturnal animals when they're active.

If You're using Oneworld miles, why not fly CX Bne-Hkg-Lhr/Fra then on to Hel? it'd make for much shorter connecting times enroute.
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!

Hi NorthStarBoy,

thanks for the Zoo idea. Will look in to that.

Final destination is HAM and booking AY was the cheapest at the time when I booked my discounted business class ticket so no chance to cancel and re-book and we were actually lucky that I managed to book him on to the same flights using miles. I actually enjoy long stopovers en route as this let's me catch-up on my work. On our way back AY routed us HAM-HEL-HKG-BNE.

Cheers from Brisbane,

Peter

Changi offers city tours for PAX in transit, you can try looking into that

Why not instead go up the Marina Bay Sands Skypark? it´s higher than the Flyer and better views all around (providing its a clear day in Singapore)

Night Safari is also pretty cool but allow plenty of time for that.

I'll vote for the zoo too. A 7 year old's dream. Marina Bay Sands is not really for children. I think they are more into animals than views. Maybe a 15-20 minute taxi ride if not in rush hour (which you have in the afternoon I think.) A Singapore resident can give you a more accurate time.

The zoo may be too far away for a 8-hours layover.
8 hours include deboarding, clear immigration, travelling to and from the airport etc.

I remembered I have to take a 30 mins ride on a bus to arrive the zoo after I got off the MRT at the nearest MRT station.
(The zoo is located at the North of Singapore while the Airport is located at the South East of Singapore)

I believe walking around the city centre, take the Singapore Flyer, go to Garden by the Bay and The Sands,
And have a dinner in the local food market will be a better choose.

According to google maps, its about 30 minutes by car (taxi). Public transport will be much longer.

Her's how I figure it:

Clear immigration, baggage claim and customs: 45 minutes
Taxi to zoo: 30 minutes
Entry to zoo, get oriented 15 minutes
see really cool animals 3 hours (how much can a 7 year old take?)
Taxi to airport 30 minutes
checkin, security 2 hours
total 7 hours
leaving 1 hour margin

Since you arrive at terminal 1 during their big afternoon rush, queues may be, for Singapore, long. Long meaning 20 minutes to clear immigration. All Australia flights arrive at the same time and if youre not on the first you may see immigration hall full of people. I usually have a coffee at the cafe overlooking the immigration hall or walk 3 minute to the small playground inside terminal 1 and leave my child there for 20 minutes if that happens.

Baggage will be waiting when you have cleared immigration and taxi should not take more than 15 minutes into the city. the taxi queue is right outside so thats a 2 minute walk.

Having a child the exact same age as yours, the interest usually isn't what i suggest.
I mean riding a tunnel with the MRT is as exciting as visiting Marina Sands Bay for example. My advise, dont overdo it, you will have woken up early in the morning to catch the flight.
The zoo is good. But do you want to spend 4 hours walking round in the Singapore humidity between flights?
I wouldnt settle for it until i arrived in Singapore and saw how energised my child was.
The zoo has a kidsworld where you can do water activities, ponyrides, feed farmanimals etc. The kids tend to enjoy it more than the animals. the panda is the pride of the zoo and is on loan from China.

if the child is tired, then do something easier.

Perhaps a rather calm Singapore river cruise, 40 minutes, followed a play in the fountains etc down clarke quay. Not super exciting but if youre getting a bit tired then something you can spend time on without having to walk around in the humidity.
Perhaps combine it with Vivo city mall. the mall has a huge playground and a rooftop waterpark that all kids love. the rooftop water park has three adventure pools, an artificial beach and 4 olympic size swimmingpools. There are always a lot of kids there.
Vivo city is a huge mall, but the playland is on floor two and the rooftop waterpark is on the top level. Much better than doing the pool in terminal1. Have an hours play there and then head back to Changi.

Changi airport offers alot of unexpected stuff. if you get tired early just take a cab back and enjoy the kids stuff there. Best of them all is the slide.
They have a slide for kids that goes between the levels at the airport. Ive taken it, its fun hehe and my 7 year old loves it, absloutely loves it. there is a few differences between the steepness in them. Google the slide at terminal 3 its something you just will find in Singapore. No other airport would ever dream up such a cool idea.
In general my kid loves Changi. Just riding the train between the terminals, feeding the fishes in terminal 2, doing the different playgrounds and going to the kids cinema. Changi in itself equals fun and play for my child so dont be scared to spend some extra time there.

Hey MillwallSean,

thanks for your great response. Based on the other comments, was just about ready to commit to the zoo but after reading your post, will plan probably plan as follows depending how tired my little fellow is after his first J flight on the upper deck.

After arrival clear immigration and head to Vivo City Mall as I have never been there and I am always keen on exploring something new. No need to wait for luggage as all will be checked through to Hamburg. Just have to make sure we have our togs and a towel in our carry-on.

Once done we will probably head back to the airport and just enjoy all that Changi has to offer. Where exactly will I find "The Slide" at the airport ? Have been in transit through SIN many times but never saw the slide.

A couple of hours before departure we will probably hit one of the lounges and take a shower and grab a bite to eat. Which lounge has the best shower facilities ? As a QF Platinium should have access to all OW business class and first class lounges at Changi.

Will get him in to his PJ's so once we get on to our AY A340, he can go straight to sleep and hopefully sleep a least 10 hours en route to HEL.

Once again thank you so much for your suggestions.

Cheers from Brisbane,

Peter

I think I saw it on the arrivals level in T3, when I was heading towards the MRT.

You can also visit the butterfly garden and the pool in Changi

Have a good (short) time in SIN!

Welcome in advance

To add to Sean Millwall's suggestion above, since Vivocity is right on the Harbour, from there you can walk along the bridge or the more interesting cable car ride to Sentosa island.

This might make it more interesting and worthwhile since Vivocity is afterall a mall.. A huge shopping mall but still a mall.

You could take a look at the Sentosa Group's website to see if any of the island's attractions are of interest to him-

Thanks MIAspotter, after all the great replies 8 hours does sound like a lot of time any more.

Hi Infinit,

Sentosa certainly looks exciting going one way with the cable car but do you honestly think we will have enough time to really enjoy ourselves over on Sentosa Island ? The Skylin Luge Sentosa looks very exciting but I really want to avoid just rushing from on place to the other. What do you think ?

Peter

That's true, it might be a bit too much of a rush. I suppose you would need a minimum of 2 hours to have an enjoyable visit to Sentosa. Perhaps you could keep it as an option if time permits (without mentioning it to your son in advance so that he doesn't get disappointed if it doesn't work out  )
