Delta Routes From 1972

Fri Jan 17, 2014 9:57 pm

Last weekend I was visiting my parents and going through boxes of childhood stuff my mom had kept and was giving to me to keep now. In one of the boxes, I found an airline ticket that my mom kept of my first flight (I was 1 year old). It was a flight from Chicago to Evansville, Indiana, I think it was flight 651 (it was a hand written ticket and hard to read) that was one way and only $23 after tax. There is no indication on it of what kind of aircraft it was, but I would guess a DC-9 of some sort. Anybody have any old time tables from 1972 and can confirm if it was a DC-9 and if it was non-stop, or maybe a stop in Indianapolis. It looks like the departure was somewhere around 11:25PM (again the hand writing is hard to determine).

Thanks

In May, two DC9 nonstops MDW-EVV and two D9S nonstops ORD-EVV, leaving at 1120 and 2010. One MDW-IND-EVV DC9, leaving at 1250.

With inflation, $23 in 1972 is equivalent to about $128 today.

Forgot to mention-- the 1120 departure from ORD was flight 657-- the other flights don't look like 651.

Most likely a DC9-3X model of some kind. The DC9-50 didn't come out until later.

Thanks for the information. I kind of thought it might have been a DC-9-30 but was not sure.

And that is nowhere near the price today for an ORD-EVV flight. One way is about $260, I wish it was cheaper, would stop the 6 1/2 hour drives I have when I go home.

What month did you travel?
Prior to August 1972 DL operated primarily DC-9-32's and a few DC-9-14's.
When DL and Northeast merged, DL added 14 DC-9-31's to the fleet.
I don't know when DL started operating the DC-9-31's on DL's original routes.

Here is the Flight Itinerary Section of DL's March 1, 1973 timetable.

http://www.departedflights.com/DL030173p86.html

DC-9-14's are coded DC9
DC-9-31's are coded D9N
DC-9-32's are coded D9S

Just like timz said, there is a flight 657 ORD-EVV, coded D9S - DC-9-32

The flight number looks like 657, the time that timz matches up closely with what is on the ticket.
