Longest RJ Flight You've Personally Taken

Wed Jun 25, 2014 11:04 pm

The thread about Mike Rowe's critique of the CRJ-700 on long flights got me thinking about long RJ flights in general, so I thought I'd start this thread...

The longest one I've taken was CLT-IAH on an ExpressJet/CO Express ERJ-145, which took close to 3 hours. I generally like the ERJ as far as RJs go, but after that long I was starting to feel a tad claustrophobic in that narrow tube, and it was starting to get uncomfortable thanks to my left leg being scrunched over due to the curvature of the plane.

Longest so far is IAH-CLT on a CO E135. In September I will be on a DL CR9 on IAH-SLC

Mine would be DFW-LAX on Skywest. Three and a half hour flight, and thank God I was in economy plus! My next longest would be IAH-CHS on Expressjet, two and a half hours and it wasn't that bad because IMO the ERJ is a lot roomier than the CRJs.

My longest turboprop flight is MYR-EWR on a Colgan Q400.

Either MCI-PHX or SAT-PHX on Mesa CR9. Can't remember which is longer. Both flights sucked though.

Also, SAT-CLT on Mesa CR9. I've done that one multiple times and it is horrible every time.

I've taken the E-145 EWR-OKC (or vice-versa) a handful of times. The longest westbound journey clocked in at four hours, three minutes wheels-up/wheels-down. To put it in perspective, it was 11 minutes short of a LAX-JFK flight I had and nine minutes longer than a ATL-LAX I had.

I think I had an ERJ-145 flight from IAH to IAD last year. I am pretty sure it was a RJ, at least. Can't remember for sure. It was a really uncomfortable flight, especially since someone took my seat and I was wedged into a window seat.

My longest RJ flight was AUS-IAD (1,297mi) on a CR7 in 2008. Mercifully I was seated in the aisle seat of the first row of economy. My longest CR2 flight was DEN-BNA (1,012mi) in 2010. I had the aisle seat in the exit row, but I still remember to this day how uncomfortable I was on that flight.

PIT-DEN on UA (ExpressJet). 1290 miles, roughly 3hrs into the wind. Yeah, that was awful.

I got rebooked onto that when UA cancelled my original flight months (via ORD) and the idiot agent wouldn't rebook me except on that flight.

DEN-SBA. Done it on a BAE-146 and a CRJ.

Routed CLT-MEM-PHX on a USE/Mesa CR9 due to a misconnect. We spent almost 6 hours on that beast. The hardest most uncomfortable seats ever sat on. The seats had the old HP logo on them so hopefully they've been replaced/refurbished since then. The F/A's were good with personality and service, but it was a hard trip for them as well.

They have replaced the covers, but still feel like sitting on a brick.

I've only taken 3 flights on RJs
SJC-LAX actual sector time 1h01min CR7
ORD-CLT actual sector time 1h27min CR7
MEM-IAH actual sector time 2h19min (due weather enroute) E145

actually I found the Embraer quite pleasant on the one seat side

2h52 block time on an E-190, I guess. But that doesn't feel like an RJ

I have a 3h block time flight on a Fokker 50 coming up... So my longest prop flight will hopefully be longer than my longest RJ flight.

EWR-OMA - 1134 miles, ~3hrs on an E145. Thanks United!

Not sure if this is classed as a regional aircraft, but flew on an Austrian Airlines Fokker 100 VIE-TBS in 2006 which was almost 1500 miles. Was quite surprised the F100 had that range.

AUS-SFO on a UA CR7 - 1504mi

Longest flight on a prop was ZNZ-ADD on an ET Q400 - 1045mi.

SLC-CVG on a 9E CR9, 1450 miles. I was lucky to get an upgrade on that flight. That was a one-off flight added to the schedule for the night before OH shut down. I think that they were shuffling a lot equipment around that night.

Longest prop flight was SEA-BZN (543 miles) on Q400, which I've done several times and will do again next week.

YYZ-IAH on a QK CRJ-705 back in 2012 clocked in at 03:32 hours gate to gate. It was blocked at 03:15 hrs but we had to restart the engines on the taxiway due to some problems with it.

In October I'm flying EWR-PBI on UA Express (although on an E170). Block time is around 3 hours.

Other relatively long RJ flights I've taken are ORD-TUL/OKC, both 2 hrs on a mix of CR7s/E45s.

If you count F50 as a RJ I'm booked on a RKV-KUS r/t later this year. Around 2,5 hrs each way.

Depending on whether or not you consider the Fokker 100 a regional jet, my longest flight on one was 2:50 from REC to GRU or 1:57 from MDT to ORD on an ERJ 145.

My longest RJ flight (MAN-MUC, LH CR1 and CR7, 704mi) is 11mi longer than my longest prop flight (CBR-BNE, QF Q400, 693mi). I was disappointed to discover this, as I thought that my longest prop flights were longer.

I've done EWR-YYT and back on a CoEx E-145XR. On the way up to Newfoundland we spent over two and a half hours getting to the runway so we were on the plane for over five hours!

The longest I've taken was ten plus years ago, PWM to ATL on a CRJ-200 with either Comair or ASA? I've forgotten which? It's usually a 2 hour 45 minute flight southbound.

I had to think about this one, but if we're counting the E190, then my longest flight would be from YYZ-YLW, just over 4 hours. As for a CRJ, it would be FNT-ATL on a CR7.

I don't think so. I consider rear mounted engines a defining feature of RJs. An E190 Business Class is better than any of the shorthaul Business Class on A320/737 cabins IMO.

My longest RJ flight is BNA-SLC on an OO CR9 (which operate some brutally long routes ex-SLC). It's 1220 nm and about 3.5 hours westbound. I've never done it in "normal" Y, but it must be brutal.

My longest 50-seater flight by distance is CLT-MSP on various 9E CRJs (some -440s, which were pretty comfortable in the right seats). I remember one flight on that route that went roughly CLT-MBS-GRB-MSP due to some weather over Wisconsin. It was quite a long flight.

DEN-PIA is probably the longest at about 2hrs and 30mins gate to gate. It is on a E145 but if you get lucky you might catch an XR. I always liked the winglets on the tiny Embraers.

ICT - LAX on an United Express CRJ (~3-3.5 hours). Heading to Edwards AFB, usually connected through Denver to Burbank, but UA started ICT-LAX non-stop, saved 2 to 3 hours in transit. Unfortunately, it landed at LAX at 5PM, and the time I saved in flying, I lost on the rush hour LA freeways. All of the rest of my trips to Edwards went through Burbank.

My second longest by distance but longest by time was YYC-SAN, also on a QK CRJ-705... 1,279NM (3hr 10min south [I did the southbound only])

ORD-ELP on CRJ-700 after 28 hours stuck at ORD due to thunderstorms. Block time was about 2:45, but it took a bit longer than that because there was weather enroute that we had to go around.
I learned that seat 5A is probably the best seat in the aircraft on Eagle...coach seat but with more legroom than the J seats had since there is no partition between the sections. Slept most of the way on that one, probably just because I didn't sleep well on the floor at ORD the previous night.

My longest by distance was ORF (Norfolk, VA) -IAH on a ERJ-145. I had an A seat though, which is not bad at all.

Longest flight time was GSP-IAH on an ERJ-145 (I think…I know it was some sort of ERJ). We had very strong headwinds, and IIRC, the flight was over 4 hours. The flight crew told us we would probably have to divert to MOB for fuel, but thankfully, we never had to. At one point we encountered turbulence, and we were told that climbing over the turbulence would take too much fuel and that we would have to put up with the bumps. While deplaning, I asked the pilot how much fuel we had left, and he said about 15 minutes before we hit the reserves.

We missed our connection, but my 8 friends and I eventually made it to Mexico.

Longest prop ride was EWR-ORF on a Q400.

I don't think I've been on a CRJ longer than a couple hours. I try to avoid those as much as possible. The ERJs are much better, particularly on the single seat side.

My personal longest RJ flight would have to be DFW-MTJ on American Eagle in 2007. The inbound was on a CR2 I believe, and the outbound was on an ATR42. Also had an ATR-42 on ATL-AVL, and CR2 on the outbound on AVL-ATL.

Without whipping out a mileage calculator or a Great Circle Mapper, off the top of my head, I can think of the following RJ routes I've flown:

ORD-BZN (CR7)
ATL-EWR (E145) - most ridiculous given the markets served
LAS-AUS (CR9)
IAH-MSP (E145)
IAH-YYZ (E145)

I'm guessing IAH-YYZ was the longest, and that was on an E145

ORD-BOI on a CRJ-700. Westbound is blocked at 3 hours 45 minutes for about 1440 nm. It's not particularly fun, but having a nonstop from BOI to ORD is worth it.

Unfortunately, I am booked on a UA MSP-LAX CRJ-700 (1535 mi) this winter as part of a trip to Asia. I actively try to avoid this flight but routing via LAX was $700 cheaper with slightly more convenient times.

Longest flight: PHL-STL on a CRJ-700: 814 mi. It would've been an E-175, but my flight arrived late and the E-175 was the last flight out for the night.

As for turboprop, the only time I flew one was PHL-SCE on a Dash 8-300.

The E-170/175 series has engines mounted below the wings and those are regional jets as well.

My longest 50 seater flight was EWR-MCI, 1,092 miles, on an ExpressJet ERJ-145. Over 3hrs of flying time, but at least I was on the one side.

My longest large RJ flight was BOS-MEM, 1,139 miles, which I've flown on Comair, Compass, Mesaba, Pinnacle, & Shuttle America on CRJ-700s, CRJ-900s, & ERJ-170/175.

My longest was on DL -- CRJ-200s SGF-CVG-PHL and the return. Also later flew SGF-DFW-CAE-DFW-SGF on AA E145s. At least on the E145s, I could grab A seats.
