Electronic Devices In Flight

Thu Jun 26, 2014 6:09 pm

Hi everyone.

Some of you may have seen that I'm planning a trip to Japan later this year and plan on flying with JL, however I'm a bit confused as to how the electronic devices rule works now.

I have a tablet I was thinking of taking with me onboard to watch my programmes and to surf the web using the WiFi service they offer. How ever is this even allowed?

That is allowed in flight, possibly from gate to gate. However, internet service does tend to be spotty, so don't expect too much.

I should probably add that I fly mostly in Europe and the US, so YMMV.

What about phones if I was to have it on 'aeroplane' mode? I'd like to use it to snap some pictures.

That should be fine, you shouldn't be too concerned.

Some airlines don't like you taking photos of other passengers. It is a privacy issue. You may have to take photos after the flight, or of just your seat, or maybe looking forward without faces. Just as a courtesy to others, you should never take photos of other passengers faces.

Thanks for the heads up.

I don't plan on taking photos of other passengers, rather the food, my seat, leg room, and out of the window. I was just concerned about using my phone as a camera?

I once forgot to turn my phone to airplane mode during a long flight and nothing happened. I didn't use it or anything, but it was still on.

That's not my concern, my concern is them getting emotional that I have my phone out and using it for photos. I'd have my tablet for doing stuff.

I am always using my phone for photos during flight, except for take off and landing when electronic devices must be put away. I've got to Instagram my whole trip, you know! So yes, it will be totally fine.

I fly for work twice a week and 95% of the time I forget to turn off my blackberry (I keep it inside my briefcase when I travel). So far, the plane hasn't fallen out of the sky...

Cheers

The most that will happen is that your battery will run out trying to establish service.

Famous last message from Coal.

Like I said, I've not got a problem with taking my phone on but rather the flight attendants getting emotional with me using it to take a picture out of the window, etc.

Having a phone without airplane mode on won't do anything to the AC.

The trick is to not let them see you do it.   On my recent trip on VS I was using my phone (messaging only) up on until we were just about entering the runway. Believe it or not, the best time to actually get away with taking a photo(for me at least) is during takeoff and landing, during those times the FA are seated (though, make sure you choose your seats wisely).

Very true, and being sat next to my friends they won't go reporting me to the FA
