, the dominant carrier was Piedmont, then US Airways, soon to be American. Pretty much the dominant carrier just changed due to mergers. I think Eastern had a largish operation there back in the day, too.
Just for fun, I'll do other places I've lived, too. At RDU
, my home airport when I was in college, there was the AA
hub back in the mid 80s to the early 90s, then Midway hubbed there and AA
kept it as a focus city for a while. After Midway went under and AA
shrunk Southwest took the top spot, although I don't know if anyone could really be called "dominant". From what I've read here Delta has been expanding at RDU
over the past few years, too. I'm not sure which one is bigger now.
At my current home airport, SMF
, Southwest is clearly dominant today with slightly over 50% market share. Since I only moved here in 2005 I don't really know who was big here before that. Perhaps someone could help fill me in. I get the feeling United used to be much bigger here than they are now, and they're still a very distant second. I also wouldn't be surprised if someone like AirCal was a big carrier here in the old days.
