SQ A380: Main Deck Or Upper Deck?

Fri Jul 04, 2014 12:57 pm

Hi there,

I have booked flights FRA > JFK > FRA with Singapore Airlines on their Airbus A380 for next May, i.e. 2015. A long way off, I know, but I am excited already - I've never flown The Whale before. During the booking process, I was surprised at the limited choice of seats available for booking (upper deck wasn't an option) but I suppose it is very early days and perhaps FRA>JFK may be operated by V2 of the A380, with biz class only on the upper deck. In the end, we secured seats in row 41 H/J/K but really, I wanted to be seated on the upper deck as I got the impression that that might be more of an experience.

Looking at the pictures on, I get the feeling that sitting on the upper deck may just be like riding an A330 with the 2 x 4 x 2 configuration, rather than 3 x 4 x 3 on the main deck. Therefore:

Is it really worth trying to secure seats on the upper deck?
Are there any other clear advantages of being on the upper deck?

Thanks in advance and best regards

Singapore Airlines V1 Version has a very small economy section on upperdeck, so unless you want to pay for business or suites, I'm not sure how easy it is to get a seat on the upper decks With Singapore Airlines. Check out the seatsmaps at seatguru:

I flew Singapore Airlines last year from LHR to SIN on the A380. I flew economy on first floor. Very good experience. I asked if there was a small chance to be uppgraded, but the guy at the counter just laughed ... I did however get a row of 3 seats all to myself ...

Unfortunetly I have never flown on the upperdecks of the Airbus 380 or the Boeing 747, so I can't really tell you what that experience is like.

The Boeing 777-200's I flew With Singapore Airlines from Hanoi to Singapore and Singapore to CPH was less impressive. Felt it was old aircrafts and a different experience than the A380. I was a bit surprised, because I would have thoguht that an airline like Singapore would have pretty much the same standard all around.

So I would choose their A380 over their Boeing 772's any time. That much I can say  Smile

I flew economy on all aircraft

My limited experience on the SQ FRA-JFK route is that the a/c does not go out full so you may find options for space on both decks. My first time I choose a window seat on the upper deck, just because I could. Also figured if other seat was occupied I would only bother 1 person when getting up to use the toilet. Ended up with empty seat next to me and set of two in front of me was also empty.

As always, great service, friendly f/a. They even suggested to some folks to spread out to have more room.

I want to live in an old and converted 727...

I flew in 75K on the upper deck on flight 317 from LHR to SIN. Very nice flight!

Having sat on the lower and upper decks of the A380 (lower deck was on QF 12 LAX-SYD), I'd say that both are very good. However, it is rare for economy passengers to be able to sit on the upper deck of any aircraft, so if I were you, I'd put myself in the upper deck. Also, a word of advice, 75K is a pretty good seat.

Also, not sure if this is a thing on the lower deck, but on the upper deck you get a little storage compartment next to you on SQ (if you have a window seat). It was very handy to store my DSLR in throughout the flight. I did not have this on the QF main-deck A380 flight.

One disadvantage might be that, in my opinion, the upper deck windows are slightly smaller than the lower deck ones. I might just be imagining it though.

You might even get served meals faster on the upper deck, I've heard this multiple times from different SQ A380 TRs.

Lower chance of winding up in a middle seat (25% on the upper deck vs. 40% on the lower deck).

I would expect meal service is also likely to be faster on the upper deck due to the small cabin.

I've flown on SQ's A380 in Y both upper and lower deck. I found the upper deck much more spacious (despite technically being smaller)

+ Storage bins on the side are very convenient
+ Quieter cabin (or should I say, EVEN MORE quieter)
+ Despite the small cabin size, there's 4 FAs serving the section. And I found the service up there much more personal and attentive, but it could just be that particular flight.
+ The joy of climbing up the stairs in JFK on an A/C without paying a lot of $$$ or shelling out your FF miles.
+ The joy of disembarking on the jetway at FRA that connects to the upper deck which gives you a very awesome view of the A/C

On the other hand, you get to really appreciate the size of the A380 when you're in the lower deck. But keep in kind, there's some what of a big gap between the wall and the window seat so it's a bit of a challenge leaning on the window.

But if I were you, do what I did: on the outbound flight (JFK-FRA-SIN) I sat on the upper-deck, while on the return (SIN-FRA-JFK) I sat on the lower deck so I got to try both.

Have a great flight with SQ, like many other people could attest, they are wonderful to fly with.

It's a cultural thing.

I flew SQ A380 in economy a few years ago, and simply called Singapore Airlines, and asked to get into the upper deck Y class, and that was no problem. I was however Star Gold at the time, but not with SQ, I didn't tell the person on the telephone that, but they would have had that info on their systems, so don't know if that was the reason they said yes.

Also, this was quite a few years ago now (2008), since then I've only flown the SQ A380 once more, and that was in Business, and at that time, less people would have asked for upper deck, simply because they didn't know.

But, it doesn't hurt to ask, and the upper deck Y class is worth it (I can compare vs Qantas main deck). Less people simply make it better.
