Completing Your "Landed There" Alphabet

Ever since I created "Have you landed at the alphabet" in 2009, the question has been re-posed several times - sometimes several times a year.

Rather than just listing the letters you have hit, how would you go about getting to the ones you haven't?

Me, I'm missing H, K, N, Q, U, V, W, X.

To do this in the least expensive way, I guess I'd have to go to KOA via HNL.

Only it really doesn't make sense that I'm missing "H" to begin with, since there are no fewer than 54 airports on my Landed There list and this country of mine contains HLN, HNL, HOU, HHH, HPN, HVN... maybe other "H" airports too. How did I manage to miss all of those?

For "N," I'm really not sure if NAS would be less expensive than some deeply discounted fare to NRT or even NCE, if AF connects there from their MSP-CDG flight. "Q" will obviously be QRO since I ain't going to no Mideast, and for "U" I'm probably going to use my AA miles for UVF but cashwise I bet St. Augustine, Fla. would be a lot cheaper.

I'm guessing I'd also have to wait for a discounted fare to VIE, and for "W" we are unquestionably looking at WYS (WDH is, I bet, way too expensive and I also have no interest in visiting Warsaw or Wellington, New Zealand).

The U.S. doesn't allow "W"or "K" to begin airport identifiers since our radio call signs start with those, so I'm not sure how KOA and WYS got their exceptions.

If expense weren't an issue:

Hong Kong or Harare

Osaka or Kathmandu

Nice or Nairobi
(still QRO.

)

Windhoek and then onward to VFA

and then... XIY. I really do want to see China someday; so much history.

Being fortunate enough to usually travel internationally, I was able to pick up all but X and Y.
I guess that certainly means a trip to Canada is due, and probably another to China as well.

I need XNA and QRO so a return AKL-IAH-QRO-IAH-XNA-IAH-AKL would do the trick.

I need: G, K, N, Q, U, V, W, X, Y, Z, and I'm just going to pretend cost doesn't matter.

G: GIG might seem like the obvious choice, especially with the Olympics coming up, but I've always dreamed of visiting the Galapagos Islands, so I would head to GPS instead.
K: KOA is the clear choice, and I would like to visit the Big Island someday.
N: Kenya and east Africa in general are another place I dream of visiting someday, so that's got to be NBO.
Q: I was disappointed to learn Quito's IATA code doesn't start with Q, but I do need U, too. I guess it has to be QRO then just for lack of any other good options.
U: UIO, obviously. I'd likely have to connect there to get to GPS anyway, but I figure I should take a day or two to see Ecuador's capital city as well.
V: Russia seems like an interesting place to visit, I guess I'll have to fly into VKO.
W: Unlike the thread starter, I would totally like to visit New Zealand, so WLG it is.
X: You know, Arkansas gets unfairly maligned sometimes. I'd totally go to XNA.
Y: Clearly a trip to Canada is in order. I hear YVR is nice.
Z: ZRH would probably be interesting.

I see your point, but for hypothetically for purposes of this thread I'd fly to WLG.

And let's see if I can put together an itinerary that will hit all those. GPS is so isolated it pretty much has to be its own tag on, but I don't care. How about...

IAH-UIO-GPS-UIO-MEX-QRO-DFW-XNA-EWR-ZRH-NBO-IST-VKO-DXB-SYD-WLG-NAN*-HNL-KOA-YVR

*Hey, another N airport I'd like to visit, and a way to get to WLG without going through AKL.

I am only missing Q and X. Those two seems the hardest to get as the majority of members are missing those two.

EDIT: Part of doing a daytrip last summer out of NYC was to get Y. Flew LGA-YUL-YOW-YYZ-JFK. Besides getting 3 Ys I got a new carrier on each sector plus the CRJ705 to my log. That whole lot of flying only cost me about $130 + 9000 BA-miles which included J on the TAM 767 between YYZ-JFK.

Need G, Q, U, V, W, X, Z.

Forgot i got K with KUL.

Working for Delta, G will likely be Gulfport at some point, but once I get around to a Brazilian Visa GIG or GRU would be preferred.

Q is obviously Querétaro, Mexico.

U in my dream would be Ulaanbaatar, probably paired with Xian for X.

W could be WYS. But I want to go to Poland, so WAW is just as likely.

V will almost certainly be Vienna. Probably this fall actually.

ZLO or ZQN to wrap things up.

Missing Q, U, W, X, Y and Z

Flying to ZRH in July so that will be covered (also a chance I'll need to go to ZNE later this year as well).

Q will be hard to get. Not any that are very likely. QRO is probably most likely, but still very unlikely.

UIO most likely for U. South America is the largest area that I have yet to travel to and very high on my list. UIO isn't the top of the list, but, if I go for a long enough trip, covering most of South America, then UIO becomes more likely.

WLG is the most likely for W. Have visited the town before, but didn't fly there. Would like to expore more of New Zealand some time. Australia has a few smaller places starting with W. No plans at the moment to travel to any of them, but work might take me a number of those at some point.

XCH is a place I would like to visit, and it is definitely a possibility in the next few years.

Y, obviously somewhere in Canada. Would like to visit at some point.

Not sure about WYS, but quite a few airports in Alaska have codes starting with K. One example: Ketchikan (KTN).

I would guess it's because Hawaii and Alaska were only U.S. territories, not states, when the codes were assigned. They both became states in 1959. The 4-letter ICAO codes for airports in Hawaii and Alaska also use the prefix P instead of K as in the 48 contiguous states. It's acutally a 2-letter prefix in Alaska and Hawaii, PA for Alaska, normally followed by the first 2 letters of the FAA identifier (usually but not always the same as the IATA code).

For example:
Anchorage - ANC - PANC
Fairbanks - FAI - PAFA
Juneau - JNU - PAJN
Ketchikan - KTN - PAKT
Nome - OME - PAOM

Hawaii ICAO codes use the prefix PH, but the last 2 letters are sometimes the first 2 letters of the FAA/IATA code and sometimes the last 2 letters:

First 2 letters:
Kahului - OGG - PHOG
Kona - KOA - PHKO
Lihue - LIH - PHLI
Molokai - MKK- PHMK

Last 2 letters:
Honolulu - HNL - PHNL
Hilo - ITO - PHTO

Q remains elusive - though I notice a couple of people list the code for Duxford as QFO - so maybe I'll have to take a trip up there and take a pleasure flight and complete my alphabet.

I just booked the trip of a lifetime to East Africa. I will be flying home from ZNZ. I think I'm a little too excited about the fact that I'll be adding Z to my list. Unfortunately I will be traveling to Kenya by land, so I won't get to add NBO and the letter N in the same trip.

Q I think is going to be the absolute hardest to get. QRO looks like one of the most likely possibilities!

After 162 flights covering all Americas, most of Europe, and some islands on the Pacific, I´m missing the following letters:

K, N, Q, R, U, W, X, Y, Z

K will be KOA and/or KTN

N first thought was NCE but then I remembered my best buddy from college lives in NBO right now and we were talking about visiting him next year.

W I'm thinking WAW - def on my list of places to eventually visit.

Z - ZIH - love Mexican beach towns and also just b/c of Shawshank Redemption

Thankfully, I did my flight training in St. Louis, MO, not too far from Sullivan MO (UUV) and I worked at Eagle long enough to do a turn to QRO.

I've had trouble with Q. Was going through an old box of papers in the roof a few days ago, when I found a v old bit of paper from Dan Air apologizing for the diversion & significant delay on my flight LIS-LGW. Had totally forgotten about it, but recall from the mists of time that some ATC centre in France had a fire & after at least an hour of circling, we put down in Quimper low on fuel and the crew out of hours.

Trouble is the codes for Quimper are IATA: UIP – ICAO: LFRQ, not quite sure if it counts

All US ICAO (4 letter flight plan) identifiers begin with K. KDCA, KOMA, KORD. KOAs ICAO is PHKO. The three letter is the IATA code (bag tags).

Interesting topic! I just did a quick survey of my log and like many of you I'm missing the high-value "Scrabble" letters. Airports I've flown in/out of: I listed the first one meeting the criteria:

K - need, unless I count KLUF (Luke AFB) but I'm using only 3-letter IATA codes.

Not an airline employee so getting the rest would be fairly expensive. Could do a circle route and visit QRO from the US; fly internally to ZIH then north back to the US on Alaska using miles.

W and X would be separate trips most likely on two different continents.

K would be a nice trip to Kona.

KOA is in the pacific region for airport codes not the United States. The real code for KOA is PHKO. It's one of those airports that have two codes like Williams Gateway KIWA/AZA, and Marquette, Mi KSAW/MQT to name a couple.
