A380 gates at HNL

NH has announced the Flying Honu (A380 with honu (sea turtle) livery), and EIS TYO/HNL in 2018.

The KE/DL JV could bring KE A380s to HNL.

The closest HNL has to A380 gates is .... a rumor, no (public) plans.

It took HI DOTrans 20 years to build the airport viaduct on H1. The ongoing HNL upgrade is mired in delays and busted budgets, and doesn't even replace the dreaded wiki buses (errrr, mali (slow) buses) .... not the 빠른빠른 that Koreans want. C&I for double daily whales at HNL .... US/KR do share Global Entry ... but not JP.

What will it take architecturally and operationally to add two or more gates for A380s at HNL?

I assume the reef runway and taxiways are OK MTOW, since their spec can handle a space shuttle, even atop a 747.

If HNL were to create a A380 gate, they would have to do a modification of gates either on the Ewa (west) wing or the Diamond Head (east) wing. The central concourse does not have a second level like the other buildings have to put in a second level jetway that would allow passengers to board the second level directly. Whereas the buildings mentioned does have a second level, complete with roadway system that moves passengers back and forth to immigration from the gates, currently.

The issue if the gates were to be modified would be how long would the modification take. And if that modification at those gates would inop the gates during the modification. Right now capacity at HNL is reaching a limit, especially with the commuter terminal getting demolished and rebuilt as a extension of the Inter island terminal, thus pushing current operators Mokulele and Island Air to find gate space in other areas. This on top of new services by airlines and (possibly) the start of service to the islands by Southwest.

Nice shot of the QF A380 at the Ewa concourse ... confirms that the surface infrastructure isn't a problem at HNL.

KanaHawaii... I forget about the demo of the commuter terminal and expansion of the interisland terminal.... no way the Flying Honu has a double-deck gate by 2018, much less two. Moreover, no expansion of C&I will probably drive more ex-NRT and ex-HND traffic to KOA and, soon, OGG.

By the time it happens A380's will be getting retired so it doesn't need to be done. The airport management here is worse than in a 3rd world country.
