Largest aircraft design without hydraulic flight controls?

Mon Dec 04, 2017 11:15 pm

Any idea on what the largest historic aircraft without hydraulic flight controls is? I know that the 707 used aerodynamically controlled flight controls. Anything bigger/heavier?

The Il-62 must be a good contender.

I believe the IL-62 was the largest and heaviest mass-produced commercial aircraft without hydraulic flight controls...

The B-52D has no hydraulic powered flight controls.

Hi: In fact Ilushin used a Self Contained Hydraulic System (ARM-62) to power a/c Rudder.
In case of hydraulic lock, You may disconnect system by operating a switch that fired a cartridge that disconnect a link. Them You must continue flying manual.
For Il-86/Il-96, 3 an "ARMs" are used, with one each added to Roll and Pitch channels

A "NO" is a positive answer., "DON'T KNOW" is not. My Tutor

The 707s with the tall fin had a similar system. The short-finned 707-300 did not have a powered rudder, though, so that may be the largest fully-mechanical airliner.
