Double Bubble hype?

Fri Dec 29, 2017 5:31 pm

New Airplane Design Could Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/new-airplane-design-could-reduce-greenhouse-gas-emissions/

I've seen variations of this in awhile, but with Boeing talking about wide-body aircraft with narrow body economics, I'm wondering if there is any actual validity to this sort of hype. Air tunnel tests don't tend to worry about the challenges of pressurization the further you get from a cylinder, and 37% less fuel in a design could mean little when you add the additional strength to deal with wings not weighed down by engines, so much weight at the tail, and the aforementioned pressurization problems. So, I am a bit dubious.

That being said, does someone with more knowledge than I wish to comment on this proposed configuration?

Thanks.

I am a grad student in the lab at MIT from which the D8 was born (although I did not work on the N+3 project directly). There are numerous papers that have been published on this project, but I will link to the conceptual design paper published in AIAA in June of this year. Needless to say, everything you have mentioned has been considered and more. MIT is working with Aurora Flight Sciences (which was just bought by Boeing) and Pratt & Whitney. There are many very intelligent people working this project from all over industry and academia.
