Build-up

Wed Jan 03, 2018 11:09 am

I was listening to a radio communication between pilot and ATC and the pilot said "request 10 degrees heading change right of track to avoid build-up".

Now what does he mean by build-up? is he referring to ice build-up or cumulonimbus clouds?

A few years ago we were around the Grand Canyon and a Skywest flight asked for some off course vectors to allow their passengers to view the Grand Canyon.

Center said they're not allowed to allow course deviations for sightseeing. So the Skywest crew reluctantly accepted the fact they werent going to be able to give their passengers a sightseeing show.

The next thing from Center was " Left and right deviations for weather approved, cleared direct Twenty-Nine Palms when able, report when direct TNP."

That was very nice of them. When I was flying to Vegas a few years on a Southwest flight, I oversaw the grand canyon. I still have the pictures on my phone.
Always have a backup plan.

A “build up” may be just a large or towering cumulus cloud, not hazardous, but can be turbulent. Or, it could a thunderstorm.
