Flight time difference from NYC to KEF

Mon Feb 05, 2018 5:27 am

I am sure I am missing something - but I have been checking the flight times of Delta, Icelandair and Wow Air on their routes from the JFK/EWR to KEF and have found a substantial difference in flight time recently. While Icelandair and Delta have been making the Eastbound journey in just under 5 hours, the Wow flights have been taking just under 7 hours. The distances have all been roughly the same at around 2600 miles. I know we are talking 757s and 767s versus the A321s ...but is there that big a difference?? Thoughts from those smarter than me....(that means you). Thanks

WOW does not have ETOPS unlike DL and FI so they are restricted to flying on routes closer to land.

Did not know about the ETOPs - you would assume an airline doing plenty of transatlantic flying would be ETOP certified. But the odd thing is the travel distance between the airlines is still very small - 200-300 miles at best - so that shouldn’t account for a 2-hour difference??

The jet stream has been in overdrive over the North Atlantic on several occasions recently.

On 2 February Icelandair took over 6 hours to fly JFK-KEF with a B767 while Delta was 4 hours and 45 minutes with a 757.

Is ETOPS really the explanation? Icelandair's 767s are ETOPS, no? Jet stream is not a reason given we're talking about flights operating on the same day.

I am quite sure you missed something there. Are you quoting air times or block times? Or both?

I was finding the same thing - just with different carriers. And the info was from the same website in the same day and basically the same route. And the times I was comparing were for completed trips.

Could it be that WW simply coasted along at a lower speed letting the jet stream keep the same stage length while DL/FI kept the same speed and caught up the time?

Using the flightradar24 playback feature, both the Icelandair and the Delta flights on February 2nd took 4 hours and 30 minutes from the moment of take off to the moment of landing (give or take a few minutes due to the fiddly scrubbing controls within the app).

FI was 6 hrs gate to gate due to FI614 departing during the European rush hour at JFK, while DL leaves much later in the evening and thus could head straight out to the runway. Time airborne was similar.
Nothing compares to taking off in an empty 757 with full thrust!
