Southampton, Runway 20 Arrival

Wed Feb 28, 2018 8:11 pm

Hi Guys

First post, so please be gentle :)

I've searched the forum for an answer and don't thinks it's been asked before.

When flying into Southampton airport, landing on Runway 20, the planes will always do a lap around Winchester, I don't think it's any sort of holding pattern as it appears to be every flight. Any ideas why . . . it's nice though, it means I get to fly over my house twice :)

Hi, welcome to the forums.

Arriving into Southampton Rwy 20 they fly to the Southampton VOR first, which obviously is located right at the airport. Then they leave it heading to the north (coming over Winchester), do a left turn of approx. 160-170 degrees to join the final approach. If you compare the approach chart to Google Maps you will see why they are flying over Winchester. Its quite self explanatory.
Looks like this: Image

Kind regards
